BOSTON, MASS. - The Emerson College women's tennis team captured two doubles matches and four singles matches to power past Emmanuel College, 6-3, Sunday afternoon at the Winsor Courts. With the victory, the Lions improve to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference while the Saints drop just their second match of the season, falling to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in GNAC play.
The Lions took an early 2-1 lead in the match after strong doubles play from their top two tandems. Sophomore Lacey Russell (Roswell, Ga.) teamed up with sophomore Savannah Mosser (Malibu, Calif.) to cruise to an 8-0 win over junior Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) and freshman Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) in #1 doubles action. Sophomore Alicia Pellegrin (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Natalie Nicholas (Syosset, N.Y.) had to work a little harder for their doubles win, down sophomore Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.), 8-4 in #2 doubles. The Saints were able to avoid the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win out of the #3 doubles team as freshman Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) partnered with junior Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) to earn the win over freshman Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass.) and junior Gina Varamo (Washington, N.J.).
Russell and Mosser put the Lions on top, 4-1, after notching singles victories over Dey and Hadlock as both sophomores were able to register 6-0, 6-2 victories.
The Saints made the match interesting as Konecnik earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over of #5 singles over freshman Jana Winfield (Andover, Mass.) while Hewes recorded a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win out of the #6 singles slot over Grady to pull the Saints to within 4-3 in the match results with the #3 and #4 singles matches still in progress.
After dropping the first set, 0-6, to Pellegrin, Woznicki rallied in her #3 singles match to take the second set 6-3 but the sophomore was unable to complete the comeback as Pellegrin prevailed with a 6-1 win in the third set to secure the win for the Lions. Reid and Nicholas also went split the first two sets as Nicholas notched a 7-5 first set win followed by a 6-2 second set win for Reid. As their match was going into the third set, the #3 singles match concluded to determine to the overall match result so the final set was play in a pro-set format as Nicholas was able to triumph with an 11-9 win.
The Saints will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they head to West Hartford, Conn. to take on St. Joseph College (CT) at 1:00 p.m. in another GNAC match while the Lions are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Providence, R.I. to face Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m.
