Oct. 5, 2009
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Women’s cruised to an 8-1 win over Newbury College in non-conference women’s tennis action played on the Pine Manor College campus on Monday afternoon. The win for Emmanuel places the Saints at 8-2 on the season with just four regular season matches remaining.
Doubles action began with competitive play across the board, as players in both first and second doubles battled for their respective leads. Newbury’s Kristen Connors (Riverside, R.I.) and Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, Mass.) came out strong with some fierce rallies but could not capitalize in the latter portion of the match. The tandem fell to senior Nory Hayes (Newport, R.I.) and junior Megan Harrington (Leceister, Mass.) by a score of 8-2.
Despite Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) and Stephanie Valentine’s (Pleasant Valley, Conn.) efforts in the \#2 position, they too were overtaken by Emmanuel, as juniors Taylor Kelly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Brianna Murphy (Wilbraham, Mass.) came away with an 8-5 victory. The Saints received a win by forfeit at 3rd singles for their third point of the match.
Singles play was dominated by the Saints as Emmanuel earned points in five out of six positions. Harrington, who was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, competed in the first singles slot for the Saints. She whipped her opponent, 6-3 and 6-0, improving to 7-1 on the season. Wojtowicz fought hard for the Nighthawks in second singles, but lost 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 to Emmanuel freshman Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.), who is now 8-1 in singles play.
Nighthawk freshman Jennifer Swafford continued to shine collecting the sole Newbury victory in the third singles spot. Emmanuel’s Lauren Lesko (Plymouth, Mass.) was victorious at 4th singles, winning a hard fought 7-5 and 6-4 match. Sophomore Erin Thornton (Worcester, Mass.) came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win at 5th singles and Victoria Trull (Lowell, Mass.) picked up a win by forfeit in 6th singles. Both Lesko and Thornton remain undefeated at 3-0 this season.
Newbury will travel to Becker College on Thursday for a match beginning at 3:00pm. Emmanuel will play again on Sunday at home against Suffolk University at 1pm.
