EMMANUEL TOPS JWU IN GNAC TENNIS BATTLE

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team picked up a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win, topping Johnson & Wales University, 6-3, in a match played at the Winsor School courts on Saturday afternoon. The match between the two conference rivals featured the Saints winning two of the three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to take the 6-3 match win. The victory pushed Emmanuel to 4-3 on the season and 3-2 in league play, while the Wildcats dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the GNAC.
Sophomore Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) and freshman Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) opened things up with a hard-fought tiebreak win in first doubles. The duo defeated JWU's Haley Nutter and Stephanie Roberti, 9-8. Senior captain Megan Harrington (Leicester, Mass.) and freshman Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) downed Victoria Ricciardi and Tammy Saunders, 8-1, in second doubles. The Wildcats got their first win of the day via a third doubles victory from Laura Schwenk and Dana Trimbord defeating Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) and Emily Resnevic (Manville, R.I.), 8-3.
Emmanuel took a 2-1 match lead into singles action. The Saints then got a win at No. 1 singles, when Dey knocked off Nutter with a 7-6, 6-3 victory. Roberti topped Harrington, 3-6, 3-6, to give JWU its 2nd point of the day, winning at 2nd singles.
Reid defeated Ricciardi, 7-5, 6-0, giving the Saints a point at No. 3 singles. Konecnik then topped Saunders, 6-0, 6-4, for a 4th singles win.
Schwenk defeated Emmanuel senior Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, N.H.), 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Emmanuel received one final point at 6th singles, when Woznicki defeated Trimborn in a third set tiebreak. The rookie won the first set, 6-4, then lost the second, 6-7, and came back to win the third set in a tiebreak at 7-6.
Emmanuel's four singles victories gave the Saints a 6-3 match win over the Wildcats. The Saints will be back in action on Tuesday in the first of a series of three matches in three days. The Saints will take on Emerson College on October 5th at 3:30pm. This match will be played on the courts at Pine Manor College.
