CLARK DEALS TENNIS TEAM 1ST LOSS OF SEASON

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark University picked up its second win of the season with a 6-3 victory over visiting Emmanuel College on Wednesday evening in women's tennis action. The non-conference match played on the Corash Tennis Courts in Worcester was the Saints' first loss of the season. Emmanuel is now 2-1 on the year, while Clark improved to 2-2 overall.
The Cougars continue to get outstanding performances from freshman Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador), who rolled to her fourth straight victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emmanuel's Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.). Clark also got a victory at No. 2 singles from freshman Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.), who knocked off Emmanuel senior Megan Harrington, 6-3, 6-2. Suriano and Sachs picked up an 8-3 win for Clark at No. 1 doubles, their second victory in three tries as a duo.
Emmanuel's singles wins came by way of freshmen Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) and Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.), who won at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Konecnik's won came in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1. Woznicki defeated Clark's Emily Schweitzer in a tough 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 battle.
The evening's nail-biter came at No. 5 singles where the Cougars' Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) defeated the Saints' Alexandra Shakra 6-3, 4-6 and won the tie breaker in a tough, 10-8, decision.
Clark visits Rhode Island College on Thursday. Emmanuel will take on Colleges of the Fenway and GNAC rival Simmons College on the same day. The match will be hosted by Simmons, but played at the Winsor School, the home courts for both programs.
