BOSTON, Mass. - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has announced the 2012 Women's Tennis Championship Bracket, featuring six teams including defending champion, Simmons College. After going a perfect 8-0 in GNAC play this year, Simmons has earned the #1 seed and a first round bye in this week's tournament play. Also earning a bye is the #2 seed, the Emerson College Lions, who posted a 6-2 record in GNAC action.
The Emmanuel College Saints earned the #3 seed and will host the #6 seed, Anna Maria College, in one of the opening round contests this Wednesday at 5:00 PM at the Winsor School Courts in Boston, Mass. The other opening round match features the #4 seed Johnson & Wales University Wildcats hosting the #5 seed Suffolk University Rams at 3:00 PM at the Cranston West Courts.
There was a three-way tie between Emerson, Emmanuel and Johnson & Wales for the #2 through #4 spots in this year's championship, as all three programs finished with an identical 6-2 conference mark. The first tie-breaker was head-to-head action and all three teams were 1-1 against each other. Moving to the next level of the tie-breaker, head-to-head match points, Emmanuel and Emerson both captured a total of 10 match points against their two opponents, while Johnson & Wales only snagging 7 points, eliminating them from the tie-breaker scenario. The deciding tie-breaker between Emmanuel and Emerson would go back to head-to-head action in which the Lions downed Emmanuel, 6-3, during their regular season meeting. Thus, Emerson earned the #2 seed, the Saints the #3 seed and the Wildcats the #4 seed.
Both Simmons and Emerson will host Semifinal matches on Saturday, October 20 with the GNAC Championship taking place on Sunday, October 21 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
