WOMEN’S TENNIS SWINGS PAST JOHNSON & WALES, 7-2
The Emmanuel College women’s tennis team posted an important 7-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University Monday afternoon at the Winsor School Courts. Led by a dominant 5-1 showing in singles play, the Saints improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action while the loss is just the Wildcats second of the year as they fall to 9-2-1 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC.
BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College women's tennis team posted an important 7-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University Monday afternoon at the Winsor School Courts. Led by a dominant 5-1 showing in singles play, the Saints improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action, while the loss is just the Wildcats' second of the year as they fall to 9-2-1 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC.
The Saints jumped ahead to a 2-1 lead in the match after doubles play and never looked back. In No.1 doubles action, sophomore Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) posted an 8-5 win over Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) and Laura Schwenk (Ottumwa, Iowa). The match was all square at 5-5 before Woznicki aced the Wildcats off the court to give them a 6-5 lead and the momentum. Hadlock would notch the win in with an ace of her own later in the match.
Senior Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) and junior Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) made quick work of Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Darcy Predieri (Sudbury, Ohio) in No. 2 doubles action with an 8-4 win. The lone Wildcat doubles win was in No. 3 singles play as the duo of junior Ansely Sego (Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Liz Sammelbraun (Evanston, Ill.) were able to register an 8-3 win.
The Saints controlled the singles action, recording wins in all but No. 6 singles play. Hadlock was able to put away Borr in the No. 1 match (7-5, 6-1) while Woznicki handled Schwek in the No. 2 match (6-2, 6-1). The closest match in singles play went in favor of the visitors as Predieri was able to top freshman Daniela Tueme (South Easton, Mass.), 6-4, 6-4, for Johnson & Wales second point of the match.
The Saints return to the courts on Thursday, October 11 when they host the University of Saint Joseph (CT) in a 6:30 PM GNAC tilt, while the Wildcats host Anna Maria College the same afternoon at 3:30 PM in Providence, R.I.
