WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNS SALEM STATE IN 7-2 UPSET
SALEM, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Saints took a 7-2 decision over Salem State University at Salem’s Central Campus Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon. Emmanuel improved to 4-3 on the year, while Salem State suffered their first setback of the year and slipped to 1-1.

The host Vikings, who went two rounds deep into the NCAA Tournament last season, found themselves down early to the visiting Saints. Emmanuel jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) and Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn) and Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) and Katrina Gaddis (Wayland, Mass.) won at first and third doubles respectively for the Saints. Hadlock and Woznicki earned an 8-4 victory over Michelle McEwen (Billerica, Mass.) and Maddy Ward (Somerville, Mass.), while Konecnik and Gaddis won 8-1 over April McDermott (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Tara Garvey (Palma, Mass.). Jessica Spinale (Saugus, Mass.) and Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) won the only doubles point for the Vikings with an 8-4 victory at second doubles over Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I) and Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Me.).
Emmanuel cruised through singles play, winning five of six matches to earn their third straight win of the year. Spinale managed the only win for Salem State at third singles, defeating Reid 6-1, 6-4. Hadlock (6-2, 6-1) and Woznicki (6-0, 6-0) both won in straight sets for the Saints at first and second singles, while Konecnik (6-3, 6-4), Hewes (6-3, 6-1) and Daniela Tueme (South Easton, Mass.) (6-0, 6-3) won their matches at fourth through sixth singles.
Salem State and Emmanuel College both return to action on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The Lady Vikings will take on Southern Maine in a Little East match, while the Saints travel to Albertus Magnus College for a GNAC contest.
