THE LEAD – The Emmanuel College softball program posted a 7-2 win over Mount Mary University Tuesday morning in Day 2 action at The Spring Games in Auburndale, Fla. The Saints move to 2-1 through three games on their Florida trip while the Blue Angels fall to 4-11 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- EC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as sophomore centerfielder Taylor Chelak (Westborough, Mass.) opened the game with an infield single to third, advancing to second on an over throw. She moved over to third on a single through the left side from senior Julyanne Pacheco (Somerset, Mass.) and came in to score the first run of the game on an attempted double-steal where the Saints traded an out for the run.
- Sophomore Amanda Penney (Warwick, R.I.) and junior Emma Crisafulli (Loudonville, N.Y.) opened the second with back-to-back singles. Penney made it 2-0 on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Sammy Hayes (Braintree, Mass.) and Crisafulli crossed the plate on a bases loaded walk drawn by junior shortstop Olivia Conti (Cranston, R.I.) to bump the lead to 3-0.
- The Blue Angels got one back in the third as sophomore centerfielder Micaela Gonzalez (Brown Deer, Wis.) belted a one-out double to left center and moved over to third on a wild pitch. She scored on a sac fly to right by shortstop Brianna Ecker (Fond du Lac, Wis.) to move the score to 3-1.
- Emmanuel opened things up with a four-run fourth to build a 7-1 cushion. A costly Mount Mary error to open the frame made all the runs unearned as first years Emely Rodriguez (Lynn, Mass.), Mackenzie Briggs (West Warwick, R.I.) and Penney all collected RBI's in the frame.
- Mount Mary picked up an unearned run of its own in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Ecker to get back one and pull the score to 7-2 heading into the late stages of the contest.
- Briggs closed the door on the Blue Angels for a successful morning in the circle to preserve the 7-2 win for the Saints by retiring the side in order the final two innings.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Briggs moves to 2-0 on the year working her first collegiate complete game, allowing just the two runs (one earned) on five hits while collected eight strikeouts.
- Chelak and Penney paced the offense with two hits each.
- Rodriguez and Briggs' hits were both the first of their collegiate careers.
