Oct. 16, 2008
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Women's Soccer Team eased past Albertus Magnus College, 7-2, on Thursday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match played at the Winsor School. The Saints utilized a balanced attack to pick up their 9th win of the season and their 7th in GNAC play, as they hosted their last regular season home game of the season. The four seniors on the Emmanuel squad (Tully Nicholas, Lauren Buffone, Kristen Goncalves, and Laureyn Furtney) were honored prior to the start of the game.
The opening eighteen minutes of the contest proved to be exciting, as the two teams traded goals twice early on, before the Saints finally took a 3-2 lead in the 18th minute. The Falcons struck first, with Brittany Collard scoring on a direct kick at 5:20. Emmanuel quickly retaliated, when junior midfielder Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA) connected on her second penalty kick of the season at 9:12.
McKenna followed with her second goal of the night, drilling a shot above the hands of Albertus Magnus' keeper, Christina Oddo, at 12:20. The Falcons tied the game again just five minutes later, when Sam Gigliotti beat Emmanuel's senior keeper Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH), knotting the game at 2-2. The Saints' rookie midfielder Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, NY) netted her first collegiate goal, with an assist from McKenna, just 15 seconds later. Carrs' goal, which proved to be the game-winner, gave the Saints a 3-2 edge. Freshman Melanie Hoffman (Topsham, ME) scored her 7th goal of the season with an assist from sophomore forward Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, MA) to put Emmanuel up 4-2 and the Saints were able to carry the two goal lead into the break.
Emmanuel managed to tack on three more goals in the second half, ensuring the 7-2 victory. Senior Kristen Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) put an unassisted shot into the top left corner of the net at 56:08. Di Nucci chipped in with a goal at 70:40, assisted by classmate Kristina Marik (Airmont, NY). Sophomore forward Alison DeCarlo (Wilton, CT) scored her second collegiate goal at 85:53, sealing the 7-2 win for Emmanuel.
The Saints out-shot the Falcons, 22-7 on the night and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Oddo made 9 saves in net for Albertus. Furtney picked up her 9th win of the season for Emmanuel.
The Saints will play again on Saturday afternoon (10/18), when they take on cross-town rival, Emerson College, at Rotch Playground in a 12:30pm start.
