April 9, 2011
The Emmanuel College women's lacrosse team celebrated senior day with a strong 17-7 win over Saint Joseph College (Conn.) on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass. The win gives the Saints a 2-6 record for the year while the Blue Jays fell to 1-6.
Prior to the start of the game, the Saints recognized seniors Megan Clary, Kristina Marik and tri-captain Megan Harrington for their dedication to the squad in the inaugural season for the women's lacrosse team at Emmanuel.
The Saints made their senior leaders proud right from the opening draw with sophomore Madeline Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) getting the game started with goal for the hosts at 28:38. Junior Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) followed Leahy's tally with two quick ones of her own with Marik adding another double not long afterwards.
Ultimately, Emmanuel would take a 9-0 lead before the Blue Jays notched their first score of the contest from the stick of senior Casey James (Windsor, Conn.). The Saints responded with two more goals to close out the half, with freshman Christina Hayes (Milford, Mass.) scoring her first career goal for Emmanuel and Clary notching her fourth of the year to give the home team an 11-1 lead at the break.
Saint Joseph grabbed the early momentum in the second half, holding possession and scoring the first two goals. Freshman Giovanna Piasecki (Hamden, Conn.) scored twice and junior Diana Soucier (Avon, Conn.) added another following an Emmanuel score by Carr to set the game at 13-4.
The two teams then traded three-goal edges with Carr, Marik and sophomore Jessica Lucas (Melrose, Mass.) tallying scores for the Saints and James, Soucier and junior Elizabeth Strange (South Windsor, Conn.) adding points for the Blue Jays. A final goal by Carr with two seconds on the clock ended the contest with Emmanuel taking home a 17-7 win.
Carr finished the game with six goals and two assists for eight points while Marik tallied four goals and three assists for seven points on the day. Harrington also kept the defense in line with a team-high five ground balls.
Emmanuel freshman goalie Hillary Dandurant (Merrimac, Mass.) notched six key saves in the match while freshman Stacey Velasquez (Norwalk, Conn.) tallied five stops for the visitors.
The Saints will host their final game of the regular season this Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. against St. Joseph's College (Maine)
