March 22, 2012
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore attacker Ashley Signoriello (Cranston, R.I.) posted a career-high six goals, while senior attacker Molly Voyer (Lincoln, R.I.) dished out a career-high seven assists, as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team took down Emmanuel College, 15-3, at the RIC Lacrosse Field on Thursday night. This closed out a three-game homestand for the Anchorwomen, who registered their first victory, improving to 1-2 on the season. The Saints fall to 1-3 with their third straight setback.
Rhode Island College got off to a hot start, notching back-to-back goals to open the game, the first courtesy of Voyer and the second from Signoriello. However, Emmanuel freshman midfielder Alexia Basile (West Hartford, Conn.) responded with a free position goal just a few minutes later to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Moments later, freshman attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, R.I.) answered back with a goal of her own, putting RIC on top, 3-1, with 11:17 remaining in the half. After freshman attacker Madison Altwies (Southington, Conn.) found the back of the net for the Saints on a free position to once again cut the deficit to one, the Anchorwomen closed out the frame with a pair of goals from Signoriello and Ricci to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
The second half was a much different story for both teams, as much of it was completely dominated by the Anchorwomen. After Ricci opened with a goal to give RIC a 6-2 lead, Basile ripped a free position shot past sophomore goalkeeper Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R.I.) on the other end with 24:52 left to play, making it just, 6-3. However, Rhode Island College rattled off the next nine goals and shut out the Saints the rest of the way, en route to the, 15-3, victory.
Voyer added a pair of goals to go along with her seven assists, while Signoriello added an assist and six draw controls to go along with her six markers. Ricci netted five goals to match her career-high and also added an assist, while sophomore midfielder Jessalyn O'Neill (North Providence, R.I.) chipped in with a goal and an assist as well.
Sophomore midfielder Sophie Kanno (Cranston, R.I.) notched her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Courtney McKiernan (Hope, R.I.) tallied an assist and finished tied for the team lead in ground balls with five. Senior defender Jenna Childs (Cranston, R.I.) added five ground balls as well, accompanied by a pair of caused turnovers.
Altwies and sophomore attacker Michaela Brennan (Worcester, Mass.) each posted a team-high three ground balls for Emmanuel, while freshman attacker Marykate McNulty (Madison, Conn.) led the Saints with three draw controls.
