MEDFORD, Mass. – The #9 Tufts University women's lacrosse team earned their first shutout victory since the 2019 season on Wednesday evening, defeating Emmanuel College 22-0 at Bello Field.
The Jumbos (10-3, 5-3 NESCAC) defense allowed just two shots in the game, as the goalie trio of Molly Laliberty, Courtney Kaufman and Pascale de Buren combined for zero goals allowed with two saves as Laliberty and Kaufman each had one. Tufts also had 13 different goal-scorers on the day, with freshman Margie Carden leading the way with four goals and fellow freshman Maddy Charest scoring three with two assists for a game-high five points. The team's 22 goals tied their season-high.
Tufts controlled the game from start to finish, as they scored five goals in the first five minutes and 11 overall in the first quarter. Carden scored four of the 11 and Laliberty played the first 10:33 in net for the Jumbos, saving the only Emmanuel (8-6, 8-3 GNAC) shot she faced.
Tufts slowed their offense down in the second quarter and beyond, scoring five in the quarter to go into halftime with a 16-0 lead over the Saints. Emma Yale started the quarter with her first career goal, scoring off a feed from Lucy Hodge and added her first career assist in the quarter as well on a Caroline Cromwell goal. Charest scored two in remainder of the quarter, including one as time expired.
After a two-goal third with goals from Rothstein and Charest, Hodge added a goal to begin the fourth quarter, and Cromwell following that up with a goal of her own. Sophia Antezana (pictured) scored her first career goal on a free position with 3:46 remaining in the game, after getting the first assist of her career in the second quarter, and Alexa Amorosino ended the game off with a goal at the end of regulation for the 22-0 shutout victory.
Tufts had the advantage in ground balls 17-6 and won 16 draws compared to Emmanuel's 7. Emma Crowley finished with nine saves for the Saints.
The Jumbos will finish the season with two NESCAC matchups and will host Hamilton on Saturday, April 23 at 12 pm. Emmanuel hosts Norwich University the same day at 3:30 pm in a key GNAC showdown with playoff implications on the line. It will also be the Saints Senior Day game in which they honor the 2022 senior class in a brief pre-game ceremony.
