THE LEAD – Saints senior Chandra Franca (Woburn, Mass.) scored seven goals for a second consecutive game while senior Jessica Borduas (Woodbury, Conn.) matched a career-high with five goals, helping lead the Saints to a 17-11 win over the Dean Bulldogs on Saturday morning in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints and Bulldogs played to a 5-5 tie, early in the second quarter, but a five-goal run for EC would help the Saints start to pull away. Franca and first-year Rachel Canedy (Woodstock, Conn.) combined for all five goals, including a man-up and free position goal for each, helping Emmanuel to a 10-5 lead. EC and DC would each add a goal to finish the half, giving the Saints an 11-6 edge at the break.
- Borduas (Woodbury, Conn.) and Bulldogs junior Jazzy Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.) accounted for the two goals for each side in the third quarter, setting up EC with a 13-8 lead with 15 minutes to go.
- The Bulldogs could only get within four in the final quarter, as Emmanuel outscored Dean 4-3 over the final 15 minutes, en route to ECs fifth-straight win.
- Borduas started the scoring 2:26 into the game, but that goal was answered 19 seconds later by Bulldogs junior Maire Brown (Huntington, N.Y.), tying the game at 1-1. Later in the quarter, EC scored back-to-back free-position goals 38 seconds apart, thanks to Franca and junior Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine) to lead 3-1. Dean closed the gap to 3-2, before Franca finished the scoring in the quarter to send Emmanuel into the second with a 4-2 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Franca's seven-goal day makes her the second player in women's lacrosse program history to have back-to-back games with at least seven goals, joining Kristen Tuleja, who accomplished the same feat in 2016.
- Borduas's five goals are a season-high and moves her to 96 career points, just four shy of becoming the 13th player in program history to reach 100 career points.
- Steele and Canedy each scored a pair while first-year Abby Brown (Saco, Maine) scored her third of the season.
- Senior Emma Crowley (Peterborough, Maine) made 14 saves, improving to 8-5 this season.
- Sztyler-Magee and first-year Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) each had four goals for Dean. Brown added a hat trick, her seventh game of three goals or more this season.
