Women's Lacrosse Matches Best Start in Program History

THE LEAD: Eight different players scored including a five-goal performance by senior Emily Saef (Moultonborough, N.H.) and junior Chandra Franca (Woburn, Mass.) to propel Emmanuel College over host Anna Maria College, 20-3, Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action on Caparso Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The AMCats jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead behind a goal from junior Ashley Ruffo (Pittsfield, Mass.) just 27 seconds into the action.
- The Saints regrouped for the assault, scoring 11 consecutive goals over the next 22 minutes of play to take a stronghold of the action following a Franca score at the 7:27 marker to make it 11-1, EC.
- Rufo netted her second goal of the half for Anna Maria to pull AMC to single-digits at 11-2 but scored twice to close the first half and then four straight to open the second stanza to build a 17-2 cushion.
- First year Raegan Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) got into the AMCat scoring column to make it 17-3 with 10:48 to play before Saef, Franca and sophomore Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine) closed out the action with goals down the stretch to account for the 20-3 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Saef finished the game with a career-high eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) while Franca also matched her career-high in points with six (5 goals, 1 assist).
- Senior Elizabeth Fortier (Newburyport, Mass.) chipped in with three goals and one helper, graduate student Allison Hutchings (Billerica, Mass.) netted two goals to go along with two assists while sophomore Madeleine Beem (Windham, Maine) collected a goal and three assists in the win.
- Junior goalkeeper Emma Crowley (Peterborough, N.H.) registered the win making one save over 30 minutes of action while first year goalie Gabby Serra (New Bedford, Mass.) made her collegiate debut in net making two saves over the final 30 minutes of action.
- Sophomore Ashley Sheehan (Medford, Mass.) suffered the loss in goal for Anna Maria, making seven saves to fall to 1-2 on the year.
- With the win, the Saints match their best start in program history at 3-0, matching the start to the 2014 season when they went on to win the GNAC Championship and post an overall record of 15-3 on the year.
UP NEXT
- EC returns to action on Friday, April 2 when they play host to Lasell University at 7:00 PM at Roberto Clemente Field in another GNAC showdown.
- Anna Maria is also back on Friday, traveling to Henniker, N.H. to take on New England College at 4:00 PM in non-conference play.
