BROCKPORT HOLDS OFF EMMANUEL IN NCAA 1st ROUND GAME
March 7, 2008
GENEVA, N.Y.-- Led by junior Brenlyn Campbell's (Williamsville, N.Y.) career-high 32 points and 11 rebounds, The College at Brockport held off Emmanuel 68-64 in the first round of the Division III NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday night at William Smith College. The Golden Eagles improved to 25-4 on the season and advanced to Saturday's regional final, while the Saints finished their season with a 22-7 mark.
Seniors Ashley Broadhurst (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and Courtney Hines (Johnstown, N.Y.) joined Campbell in double digits with 18 and 10 points, respectively, while junior Kiomi Matthews (Rochester, N.Y.) added seven rebounds and four assists for Brockport. Hines also registered four assists and five steals in the win.
Emmanuel was led by sophomore Iman Davis' (Toms River, N.J.) double-double effort of 19 points and 12 boards, while senior Jade Paez (Bronx, N.Y.) added 14 points, and senior Jacque Pannell (Bloomfield, Conn.) tallied 11 points and seven rebounds. Davis also notched four steals on the night.
Brockport dominated the majority of the first half, beginning the game with an 18-4 run, and holding a 25-7 lead with 7 minutes, 39 seconds to play in the stanza. Campbell scored 19 of her 32 points in the first half, including eight in the final three minutes.
Emmanuel began its comeback bid following a jumper by Paez at 7:23. The good bucket sparked a 10-3 scoring run by the Saints, cutting their deficit to 28-17 with 2:52 play in the half. Emmanuel capitalized on four free throws by Pannell in the last 26 seconds of the period to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 10 (34-24) at the break.
In the second half, the Saints cut their deficit to three, 36-33, as senior Maura Mooney (Essex, Vt.) converted a Brockport turnover with 14:30 left on the clock. Emmanuel did not let Brockport lead by more than eight points for the remainder of the game. The Saints held the Golden Eagles to just six second-half field goals, but sent Brockport to the line 28 times in the second stanza.
The Saints' typical pressure defense tallied 14 steals and forced 28 Brockport turnovers. Emmanuel was able to score 25 points off the turnovers. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Saints, 44-37, for the game. Brockport's 41.2% field goal percentage was a major factor in the game, as the Eagles connected on 21 of 51 shots from the floor. Campbell was near perfect in the effort, hitting 14 of her 19 field goal attempts and 4 of 5 from the line.
The Saints made their final run in the last minute of action, when Davis completed a traditional three-point play with 14 ticks on the clock to bring her team within two (65-63), but Broadhurst connected on three freebies from the line down the stretch to insure the Brockport victory.
The Golden Eagles will advance, facing host William Smith College on Saturday in the NCAA regional final.
