BOSTON – Emmanuel College Women's Basketball (1-2) defeated St. Joseph's (L.I.) (1-1) on Saturday afternoon on Andy Yosinoff Court. The win was part of the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Classic and secured a spot for the Saints in tomorrow's championship game. Prior to the game, Head Coach Andy Yosinoff was honored by Emmanuel College Acting President Dr. Beth Ross for his 900th career victory last February. Numerous college staff, faculty, and alumni were in attendance to honor Yosinoff for his historic milestone.
The Saints jumped out to an early 7-0 run that included two baskets from sophomore forward Megan Reilly (Southbury, Conn.). The Eagles were able to respond with a 10-0 run of their own in three minutes of play, taking a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter was controlled by Emmanuel, outscoring the visitors 19-9 over the ten minutes. The charge was led by senior forward Kiera Eubanks (Portland, Maine) who totaled nine points in the quarter as the Saints took a 28-19 advantage heading into the break.
A back and forth third quarter allowed Emmanuel to hold their lead. Megan Spina (Selden, N.Y.) did all she could to help the Eagles cut the lead down, but her eight third quarter points were not enough to bring St. Joseph's any closer. The Saints maintained a 42-33 advantage through thirty minutes.
A Lanyah Ford (Copiague, N.Y.) three pointer less than a minute into the fourth quarter cut the Saints lead down to six points. Spina added a free throw a minute and a half later, but the Eagles never got closer than five. Nine seconds after the free throw, senior guard Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.) found space beyond the arc and drilled a three to extend the lead to eight. Ford was able to cut the lead to five again with just under six minutes to play, but a Meagan Schuermann (Cooperstown, N.Y.) jump shot followed by another basket from Matela put the Saints up nine. Emmanuel held and extended the lead from there and earned themselves a spot in tomorrow's championship game.
Matela finished with a game-high 18 points while adding five assists. Schuermann added 14 points and Eubanks contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ford led the Eagles with 14 points and four steals. Casey Travers (Manorville, N.Y.) added 12 points and Spina added 11 in the loss.
