BOSTON, Mass. –– Despite suffering an upset in last week's GNAC Women's Basketball Championship, the Emmanuel College Saints will have a shot at some March Madness after all. Although they will not head to the "big dance" this season, the Saints have earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship and will play host to the No. 7-seeded Curry College Colonels on Wednesday night. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 PM in the Jean Yawkey Center.
The tournament is an eight-team field, with a quarterfinal round followed by a semifinal and championship round. In the first-round contests on Wednesday, March 4, Emmanuel (18-10) will host Curry (17-11), while the first seed Westfield State University (22-5) will host No. 8 Western New England University (17-10). No. 3 Roger Williams University (19-7) hosts No. 6 Brandeis University (13-12) and Norwich University (22-5) will take on Keene State College (17-10) in the No. 4/No. 5 match-up.
This marks the second consecutive season the Saints have earned an ECAC tournament bid, earning the No. 1 seed in the 2014 field before being ousted by Brandeis University in the opening round.
The Saints are led by junior guard Sarah Higgins (Groveland, Mass.) who leads the team in scoring with 13. 4 point per game to go along with 5.4 rebounds per game. Senior center Jennifer Bujnowski (Salem, N.H.) and senior forward Vanessa Bramante (Stoneham, Mass.) also average in double-figures and will get a chance to extend their Emmanuel careers with a chance at the program's first-ever ECAC championship.
Curry is led by senior guard Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) who leads the Colonels averaging 14.8 points per game. Curry earns the No. 7 seed after falling the Coastal Commonwealth Conference (CCC) Women's Basketball Championship to University of New England, 81-72, this past weekend as the No. 2 seed in the CCC tournament field.
Emmanuel will provide both Live Stats and Live Video for Wednesday's ECAC Tournament game.
