Saints Win Thriller to Outlast Regionally Ranked Bears
BOSTON - The Emmanuel College Men’s Soccer team collected 1-0 victory over Bridgewater State University in a Wednesday night, non-conference matchup at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints move to 4-8-1 in overall play while the Bears pick up their second loss of the season and sit at 6-2-1. As of October 10th polling, Bridgewater State University is ranked fourth in Region II.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddox Pierce (Meriden, Conn.) recorded a clean sheet in the matchup with an impressive career-high 14 saves. The standout performance inlcuded a penalty kick save to keep the score level at 0-0 in the 76th minute and four saves in the final 11 minutes after the Saints took the lead. Pierce is coming off receiving Great Northeast Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors in week 6 of GNAC weekly reports. Bridgewater State's goalkeeper William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded two saves on three shots on goal in this loss.
On the back of a career best game by Pierce, the Saints prevailed. A 79th minute goal on a high IQ score from first-year forward Guilherme Silva (Malden, Mass.) was the difference. This came off an assist from sophomore Joe Anderson (Tampa, Fla.). Silva beat the lone defender and snuck the ball past the Bear's goalkeeper to put the Saints ahead.
Senior forward Will Halben (Attleboro, MA) led Bridgewater with three shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. The Bears outshot the Saints 21-7 throughout the 90 minutes, but the Emmanuel backline held strong and kept a 0 on the scoreboard to seal the victory.
The Saints return to Clemente Field on Saturday (10/14) where they will honor their senior class as they take on Anna Maria College at 12:00 P.M. for some GNAC action. Prior to the match, Emmanuel will host their annual alumni men's soccer game at 9:30 A.M. Bridgewater State looks for a bounce back win this Saturday on their home field where they host Mass. Maritime at 1:00pm.
