BOSTON – Two goals inside the first 15 minutes of the match were enough for Emmanuel College (1-4-1 GNAC) to take down Regis College (1-5-0 GNAC) 2-0 on Saturday afternoon for their first victory of the season in GNAC play at Clemente Field.
Junior defender Nick DiPace (Watertown, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 6th minute of play for the Saints, grabbing his first career goal. A foul by Regis led to a free-kick down the left side of the field in the final third. Ryan Ragosta (Lincoln, R.I) swung a curling right-footed ball into the box that was headed on net and saved by Pride goalkeeper Ethan Donahue (Methuen, Mass.), but DiPace was there to fire home the rebound and put the Saints ahead.
Just seven minutes later the Saints doubled the lead through Zachary Barown (Colebrook, Conn.) off another rebounded shot. Joey Soucy (Attleboro, Mass.) retrieved the second ball behind the defense from a punt by Saints goalkeeper Maddox Pierce (Meriden, Conn.). The shot was pushed out wide when Barown came racing into the right side of the six-yard box, beating the Regis defensemen to the ball and finding the back of the net for his first career goal.
The Pride tried to find their way back into the game off a free-kick outside the 18-yard box. Freshman midfielder Michael Cipriano (Thomaston, Conn.) sent the left footed free kick over the crossbar leaving the deficit at two. In the 27th minute, Joey Davila (Bristol, Conn.) found space down the right side and put a shot on goal, but Pierce was there to make the save.
DiPace and fellow central defender Josh Huckans (Broadalbin, N.Y.) helped hold down a strong back line throughout the remainder of the match, not allowing a shot in the final 63 minutes of play. The Saints finished with a 14-2 shot advantage. Ethan Donahue finished with three saves for the Pride.
The Saints will head to Johnson & Wales University this Wednesday (9/27) for a 7 p.m. kick-off to continue GNAC play. The Pride return home for a GNAC matchup against Norwich University on Wednesday (9/27) at 4:30 p.m.
