THE LEAD – The Emmanuel College men's soccer team led for nearly 80 minutes on Wednesday evening but settled for a 1-1 draw in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener vs. Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday evening at Roberto Clemente Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Joey Soucy (Attleboro, Mass.) gave the Saints the early lead with his third goal in as many games to put Emmanuel ahead, 1-0, during the 10th minute of play. Junior back Luke Hines (Bristol, Conn.) played a long ball down the right flank that found Soucy in stride before the forward deposited a strike to the near post for his third goal of the 2022 campaign.
- The Saints were controlled the game with the one-goal lead for much of the action until the Wildcats began to press for the equalizer with about 15 minutes remaining in the contest. JWU had two attempts on frame during the 75th and 76th minutes of play but graduate student keeper Vincent Conelli (West Hartford, Conn.) turned both away to keep the score at 1-0 heading into crunch time.
- EC sophomore midfielder Richie Hickson (Woodstock, Conn.) almost seal the win with 7:06 to play, beating the Wildcats outside back on the left side but his shot attempt hit the post to keep the visitor's hopes alive.
- With less than a minute remaining in the second half, JWU sophomore Conner Elliott (Mansfield, Mass.) drove the ball to the Saints end line and dropped a pass in front of the goal mouth that sophomore Brian Miller (Ramsey, N.J.) tucked home to even the match with 51 seconds to play to account for the 1-1 draw.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- JWU finished the night with an 8-6 edge in shot attempts while holding a commanding advantage in corner kicks with an 8-2 margin.
- Conelli finished the night with a pair of saves to earn the draw and move to 2-1-2 on the season while his playing counterpart, senior Jacob Friedman (Woodland Hills, Calif.) moves to 3-1-2 on the year in net for JWU.
- The draw is the first stalemate between the two sides in 23 career meeting and breaks an 11-match winning streak for the Wildcats over the Saints.
