BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team wrapped up its inaugural season of varsity competition with an overall record of 7-9 while posting a 3-6 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, going above and beyond most expectations of a typical first-year program. Behind the guidance and direction of Head Coach Brendan McWilliams, the Saints will look to add to the solid foundation they established in 2012 and continue to build the program.
On March 4, the squad played the first-ever varsity game down in Greensboro, N.C. during Spring Break week against Cazenovia College. Although EC dropped a 9-5 decision, junior attacker Ted Dimando (Hampstead, N.H.) made history by netting the program's first goal.
EC would make more history on April 15 when the Saints recorded the program's first victory over Green Mountain State in their first-ever home game at Clemente Field. EC jumped out to a commanding 10-0 halftime lead en route to a 14-1 win. Freshman Josh Condry (Upton, Mass.) led the way with three goals and one assist and Dimando also potted three goals while senior middie Eddie Thy (Portland, Maine) added two goals and two assists.
The Saints made it two in a row with a 15-3 win over University of Maine - Farmington as Dimando set the single-game scoring record, registering six goals in the victory.
On March 21, EC rallied for a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Regis College, netting three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Freshman goalie Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.) was huge in the victory making 15 stops in net while freshman middie Jake Jaskolski (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) added an offensive lift with two goals.
The solid play continued on March 26 as nine different Saints scored in a 14-0 victory over Wheelock College as Lauzier and freshman Justin Byers (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined for the shutout with four saves.
The team would tally its first GNAC victory on March 31 in a 17-8 showing vs. Emerson. Sophomore attacker Brian O'Regan (Milton, Mass.) enjoyed a strong all-around performance with two goals and five assists while freshman Evan Dolber (Malden, Mass.) and Dan O'Brien (East Haven, Conn.) added hat tricks in the win.
A 16-7 victory over Rivier College made it two GNAC wins in a row for the Saints as rookie Joel Berger (Cape Neddick, Maine) paced the offensive output with four goals while Dolber and freshman middie Jake Pickett (Stratham, Maine) added three scores each.
Following the Rivier over Rivier on April 5, the Saints hit a mid-season snag, dropping four consecutive GNAC contests before wrapping up the regular season with a much needed 11-6 win over Daniel Webster to guarantee a spot in the GNAC playoffs.
The Saints 3-6 GNAC record earned them the No. 7 seed and a Quarterfinal match up vs. the defending GNAC champions in Mount Ida College. EC played the Mustangs strong for the first 40 minutes of action, trailing just 3-1 midway through the third quarter before falling to this year's eventual champion, 10-3.
Both Dimando (19 goasl/7 assists) and Jaskolski (12 goals/14 assists) ended the season with 26 points to rank tied for 10th overall in the GNAC and Jaskolski's 14 helpers ranked tied for ninth in the conference. Lauzier was honored by the GNAC as the conference's Goalkeeper of the Week for his play during the final week of the regular season and ended the year with an 8.03 goals against average to rank fourth in the GNAC while averaging 10.11 saves per game.
The Saints bid farewell to just three seniors in Thy, Jeff McMahon (Madison, Conn.) and Pat Froass (Oneida, N.Y.), returning the bulk of the roster in 2013.
