EMMANUEL SHUTS OUT WHEELOCK IN COLLEGES OF THE FENWAY MEN'S LACROSSE ACTION
March 26, 2012
BOSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel College defeated Wheelock College, 14-0, in non-conference men's lacrosse action played under the lights at Roberto Clemente Field on Monday night. The Colleges of the Fenway battle featured two new varsity programs, as Wheelock began its team in 2011 and the Saints are playing in their inaugural varsity campaign this year. With the shutout victory, Emmanuel improves to 4-3 on the season, while Wheelock is still seeking the program's first win at 0-5 overall.
The Saints maintained solid possession for much of the contest and found the scoreboard quickly, netting their first marker just 80 seconds into the game. Freshman attackman Evan Dolber (Malden, Mass.) scored for the Saints with an assist from Jake Jaskolski (St.Clair Shores, Mich.). Jaskolski would next find Andrew Lawson (Suffern, N.Y.) for his first goal of the season at 10:56 and Emmanuel led 2-0.
Two goals by senior midfielder Eddie Thy (Portland, Me.) sandwiched freshman Luke Tallarida's (Hanover, Mass.) first collegiate goal and the Saints led 5-0 to kick off the second quarter.
Dolber would score again unassisted, before sophomore tri-captain Brian O'Regan (Milton, Mass.) netted three-straight to extend the Emmanuel spread to 8-0, heading into the break.
Dolber's third goal of the night came just two minutes into the second half, when he scored off an assist from Lawson. Freshman middie Jake Pickett (Stratham, N.H.) scored his fourth goal of the season on an unassisted shot and Emmanuel led, 11-0.
Saints leading scorer Ted Dimando (Hamstead, N.H.) buried a rocket off an assist by Jack Ruggiero (Manhasset, N.Y.) for his 11th goal of the season. Senior captain Jeff McMahon (Madison, Conn.) received a feed from Dolber to give Emmanuel a 13-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Zac Schaefer (Allenstown, Pa.) scored with just over a minute remaining and the Saints came away with the 14-0 win.
Goalies Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.) and Justin Byers (Indianapolis, Ind.) shared time in net for the Saints. Lauzier played the first half, making 3 saves and picking up the win, while Byers made one stop playing the full second half for Emmanuel.
Wheelock's junior goalie Mike Manning (Brookfield, N.H.) suffered the loss for the Wildcats, but made 9 saves in the effort.
Emmanuel out-shot Wheelock, 37-8. The Saints were favored in groundballs, winning 22 to 14 by the Wildcats. Both teams were unsuccessful in all extra-man-opportunities.
The Saints will play at home again this Wednesday night, March 28, when Emmanuel hosts Norwich University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game slated to begin at 7:00pm. Wheelock will host UMaine Farmington on Wednesday in a 3:30pm start.
