MEN'S LACROSSE NOTCHES HISTORIC VICTORY OVER GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE IN 2012 HOME OPENER
March 15, 2012
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team used a balanced offensive attack en route to a 14-1 victory over Green Mountain State College, Thursday evening at Clemente Field in Boston, Mass. The win was the first-ever for the Saints program, which began varsity competition earlier this season and improve to 1-2 on the year with the "W" while the loss drops the Eagles to 0-1 in their opening game of the 2012 campaign.
Emmanuel took control of the contest early and never looked back behind an impressive first-half showing in which the Saints built up a 10-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
In the opening quarter, freshman attacker Josh Condry (Upton, Mass.) got the scoring started, finishing a feed from sophomore Brian O'Regan (Milton, Mass.) in a man-up situation to make it 1-0, at the 10:16 mark. After over four minutes of scoreless action, Emmanuel would strike three times in a span of 2:16 off the clock to take a 4-0 advantage. Junior middie Ted Dimando (Allston, Mass.) made it 2-0 at 5:58, finishing a nice feed from Condry before senior Eddie Thy (Portland, Maine) bumped the lead up to 3-0 with a goal just 1:03 later coming from off an assist from freshman midfielder Joel Berger (Cape Neddick, Maine). Berger would cap the Saints scoring in the first with an unassisted tally with 3:42 left in the frame to give EC the four-goal cushion.
Dimando and Thy would team up on a pair man-up possessions to open the second quarter on back-to-back offensive sets to help the Saints increase their lead to 6-0. In nearly identical plays, Dimando netted a pair of goals from point blank range at the 13:43 and 12:47 markers, both coming off of feeds from Ty to help the Saints continue to add to their lead. Condry would net his second goal of the evening to make it 7-0 as freshman middie Jake Jaskolski (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) tallied the assist. Freshman attackman Evan Dolber (Malden, Mass.) got into the scoring column with 8:02 to play in the first half with an unassisted marker to give EC the 8-0 edge before Jake Pickett (Stratham, N.H.) contributed an assisted goal of his own at the 2:16 mark to make it 9-0, EC. Thy would round out the first half's scoring with his second goal of the game coming with just 17 tics remaining in the quarter as freshman Jack Ruggiero (Manhasset, N.Y.) set up the senior for a nice entry feed to help the Saints take the 10-0 lead into the break.
Jaskoliski opened the second half by netting his first collegiate goal just 50 seconds into the action to give Emmanuel an 11-0 advantage before Green Mountain would get on the board with 6:49 left in the third on a crafty goal right in front of the Saints crease by sophomore middie Chris Milholland (Freeport, Maine). Millholland was assisted by sophomore defender Charles Petirck (Henniker, N.H.) to help the Eagles avoid the shutout, making it an 11-1 game. The Saints would close the third quarter with another Condry goal, his third of the game at the 3:43 mark to make it 12-1.
Emmanuel would add two goals in the fourth quarter to account for the 14-1 final. Ruggiero found the back of the net with 11:39 left in the contest before freshman middie Zac Schaefer (Allenstown, N.H.) scored his first collegiate goal to conclude the night's scoring with 4:04 to play. Both of the Saints fourth quarter goals were assisted by freshman attackman Dan O'Brien (East Haven, Conn.).
Freshman goalkeeper Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.) posted two saves in the opening half for the Saints to earn the victory and was relieved in the second half by freshman Justin Byers (Indianapolis, Ind.) who allowed just the one goal in 30 minutes of action. Sophomore Luke Carey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) manned the pipes for the Eagles all night, making eight saves over 60 minutes of work.
The Saints will return to action on Monday evening when they host University of Maine-Farmington at 7:00 PM while the Eagles are back on the pitch next Wednesday when they travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier College at 6:00 PM.
