THE LEAD – Scoring the first eight goals of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference match provided more than enough offense for the Emmanuel Saints men's lacrosse team, as they defeated the Norwich Cadets 14-7 on Sabine Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.) and sophomore Ryan Etzo (Bedford, N.H.) turned out to be the only tallies of the first quarter, setting the table for an explosive outburst for Emmanuel in the second. On the other end of the field, senior goalie Randy Castle (Boxford, Mass.) was a perfect 2-for-2 on saves, leading to an EC advantage of 2-0 through the first quarter.
- First-year Cole Cloney (Medfield, Mass.) doubled the Emmanuel lead with back-to-back goals early in the second quarter, boosting the lead to 4-0. Junior Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) combined for the next four Saints goals, including three scored in a span of 1:56, as the EC lead sat at 8-0 with 6:03 left in the first half.
- Quick strikes for Cadets juniors Coley Bagwell (York, Pa.) and Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) in just 22 seconds cut the deficit to 8-2, but Ryan Castle would seize momentum back for Emmanuel, capping the scoring in the first half with the Saints leading 9-2.
- The Cadets couldn't close to within less than six, despite back-to-back man-up goals in the third quarter that resulted in Norwich trailing 10-4. In all, the Saints and Cadets scored three times each in the third quarter, helping EC to a 12-5 edge with one quarter to play.
- Dickinson and Quigley netted the first two goals of the fourth for Emmanuel, upping their lead to 14-5. NU responded with two goals of their own, but the EC offensive success of the first half was too much for the Cadets to overcome, as Emmanuel claimed the 14-7 win.
