DelVecchio Nets OT Game-winner to Lift Men's Lacrosse Past Dean, 11-10
FRANKLIN, Mass. – Sophomore Derek DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal in overtime to power Emmanuel College past host Dean college, 11-10, Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action.
FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 11, 2021– Sophomore Derek DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal in overtime to power Emmanuel College past host Dean college, 11-10, Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action.
Dean erased a four-goal deficit to force the overtime, but ultaimtely fell to the Saints in their first-ever meeting. The game also marked the Bulldogs' first of the season and as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
Dean (0-1, 0-1 GNAC) and Emmanuel (2-3, 2-2 GNAC) will meet again next Saturday in Boston, Mass.
The Saints, playing their fifth game of the season, raced out to a 4-0 lead as Dean adapted to game speed. EC sophomore Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) scored twice in the run for Emmanuel.
Dean got on the board with 4:29 to play in the first when freshman Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Emmanuel regained a four-goal lead early in the second off the stick of first year Robert Favuzza (Saugus, Mass.).
After more than six minutes of scoreless action, the Bulldogs found the offensive rhythm and made a run. Dean scored the next four goals to tie the game at 5-5 with less than two minutes to play in the half. Freshman Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) notched not just his first collegiate goal, but three in that spurt, which surrounded another tally for Speirs.
The Saints answered with the final goal of the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the action went back and forth with Emmanuel holding a slim lead. Each team put three goals on the board to keep the game at a one goal difference, 9-8, after 45 minutes.
The visitors took a two-goal lead midway through the fourth on junior Colin Dickinson's (Barre, Vt.) third goal of the game. A goal by sophomore Greg Centeio (Fairhaven, Mass.), which was assisted by Alvarez-Segee, pulled the Bulldogs to within one with 5:41 left in regulation.
Alvarez-Segee then found the equalizer with 1:07 on the clock to knot the game at 10-10.
Emmanuel had the final possession and took a shot in the waning seconds, but Dean junior goalie Alexander Govoni (Lakeville, Mass.) was up to the task and made the save.
The Saints then got the game-winner from DelVecchio 1:10 into the overtime session.
Dickinson had three scores to lead Emmanuel, while Favuzza, Castle and Derek DelVecchio each scored twice.
Alvarez-Segee led Dean with four goals and an assist. Centeio and Speirs chipped in with two goals apiece.
Emmanuel goalie Randy Castle (Boxford, Mass.) had six saves in the win. Govoni finished with 19 saves, including several game-saving stops late in the fourth, for the Bulldogs.
