NEWTON, Mass. – Seniors Chris Baglivi (Mattituck, N.Y.) and Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) were both honored by the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) this week, earning prestigious individual recognitions. Baglivi was selected to play in the NEILA East-West Senior All-Star Game while Cibelli was named to the NEILA Academic All-New England team for Division III.
Baglivi becomes just the fourth player in program history to be selected to the annual NEILA East-West Senior All-Star game joining the ranks of Brian O'Regan ('14), Pat Heffernan ('16) and Chris Curtis ('16). The 2017 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year will partake in the festivities on Friday, June 2 at Springfield College where the game is scheduled to start with a 6:30 PM face off at Stagg Field.
All players and coaches were nominated by the head coaches within the NEILA. Players were then ranked and selected by a committee awarding seniors from all three NCAA Divisions who played their college career in the New England region.
"The NEILA recognizes these terrific student-athletes for their accomplishments over their entire playing careers. To be selected for the East-West All-Star game means that you have been a star not just this year, but throughout your four years in New England collegiate lacrosse," said Tim Murphy, head coach of Curry College and coordinator of the East-West All-Star team selection process.
The NEILA East-West game also gives assistant coaches from some of the top programs each year the opportunity to take the reins as the coaching staffs of each team. This year, the West will be coached by Brad Bishop of Keene State, Liam Murphy of Eastern Connecticut State, and Ben Lanman of Southern New Hampshire. The East will be head manned by Kevin Gould from UMass Lowell, Anthony Nardella of Saint Anselm and Derek Marshall of Wheaton College.
Seventy-five senior men's lacrosse players including Cibelli earned selection to the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Academic All-New England teams. Members of the team are nominated by head coaches in Divisions 1, 2 and 3, and are comprised of student-athletes who have excelled both in the classroom and on the field over the course of their men's lacrosse career.
Forty-two student-athletes from 22 different Division 3 institutions met the criteria, which required that nominees must have senior standing, a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, and be a significant enough player that he was nominated for at least All-Conference selection.
Cibelli earned the honor after graduating from Emmanuel with a 3.59 GPA and earning First Team All-GNAC honors his senior season. He was one of just five student-athletes honored with this accolade from the GNAC in 2017.
