BOSTON, Mass. – Senior middie Chris Curtis was the difference maker for Emmanuel College, scoring four goals to carry EC past Norwich University, 9-5, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints win their third straight and improve to 4-7 overall and 3-0 in GNAC action while the loss drops the Cadets to 3-7 and 2-1 in the GNAC.
Norwich jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind an unassisted goal from sophomore middie Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) just 1:49 into the game. It took Emmanuel some time to settle into the offensive flow of the game before senior attack Michael Donovan (Assonet, Mass.) evened the score at 1-1 with his 11th goal of the year with 7:08 to play in the opening period.
Emmanuel junior attack Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) gave the Saints the lead for good with 1:22 to play in the opening quarter with his 17th goal of the year to lift EC on top, 2-1.
The Saints opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals by Curtis and junior attack Donnie Litzelman (Stratham, N.H.) to go up 4-1 but the Cadets responded with back-to-back goals of their own to pull within one score. Goals by sophomore Nick Imbriani (Foxboro, Mass.) and senior Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.) made it 5-4 with 3:16 to play in the half but Curtis killed the visitor's momentum with his second goal of the quarter to give Emmanuel the 6-4 cushion heading into halftime.
The Cadets opened the second half with a man-up goal by senior Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.), cutting the deficit to one at 6-5 but Curtis came to the rescue with his third goal of the game to make it 7-5 with 4:04 to play in the third.
Norwich continued to keep the game in reach as Jenkins netted his 15th goal of the year to open the fourth quarter scoring, pulling the Cadets to one with a 6-5 score but Emmanuel closed the game with three unanswered scores en route to the 9-5 win. Curtis opened the run with his fourth of the afternoon followed by tallies from Litzelman and Cibelli to seal the win.
EC sophomore goalie Austin Rosenberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) made 11 save to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the year in net while NU rookie goalie Ian Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) made 10 save in the losing effort.
Emmanuel returns to action on Wednesday, April 13 when they hit the road to Nashua, N.H. for a GNAC contest vs. Rivier University at 7:00 PM. Norwich is back the same night for a non-conference road game vs. Castleton State at 7:00 PM.
