NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore attack Matt Beebe (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored six goals including the game-winner in overtime to lift the Keuka College men's lacrosse team over Emmanuel College, 13-12, Saturday morning at Grellier Field on the Lasell College campus. In the season-opener for both squads, the Storm improve to 1-0 while the loss dips the Saints to 0-1.
With the score deadlocked at 10-10 midway through the fourth quarter, the Saints were able to take a one goal lead following an unassisted tally from sophomore middie Justin Kelly (Collegeville, Pa.) with 3:40 remaining. With 1:17 to play, sophomore middie Chris Curtis (Ashland, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the game to give EC a 12-10 lead but the Storm won the ensuing faceoff and immediately answered on a Beebe score to cut the lead to 12-11 with just under a minute to play in regulation.
Following an Emmanuel timeout, Keuka was able to win the ensuing faceoff to secure at least one more offensive possession. Freshman middie Jamie Kuppel (Liverpool, N.Y.) stepped up to the call and registered an unassisted goal with just 22 tics left on the clock to even the score at 12-all. The Saints were able to control the final faceoff but a shot by Curtis with six seconds to play was stopped by junior goalie Eric Saltrelli (Webster, N.Y.) to send the game into overtime.
Beebe didn't waste much time, scoring the game-winner just 33 seconds in the extra session to secure the road victory for the Storm.
In the early action, the score was tied 3-3 after the first before Keuka surged to a 6-4 lead heading into halftime. The Saints outscored the visitors, 6-1, in the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead into the final frame. Three scores in the third came from junior attack Evan Dolber (Malden, Mass.).
Three unanswered goals from junior middie James Voigt (Penn Yan, N.Y.), Beebe and again Voigt to open the fourth accounted for the 10-10 score heading into crunch time.
Beebe ended the day with seven points on six goals and an assist while Kuppel, Voigt and junior attack Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, N.Y.) all added two goals. Senior attack Connor Latimer (Whitby, Ontario) was the main playmaker for Keuka, assisting on five goals.
Curtis led the Saints with a team-high four goals while Dolber added three scores. Freshman middie Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) notched three points on a goal and two assists in his collegiate debut.
Saltrelli was fantastic in net, stopping 24 shots for the win while junior goalie Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.) was a tough-luck loser, stopping a career-high 18 shots in his 2014 debut.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday, March 5 when they take on MIT in non-conference play at 4:00 PM while Keuka is idle until March 8 when they hit the road to face Elmira at 1:00 PM.
