MEN’S LACROSSE DOWNS SUNY MARITIME, 14-7, IN SEASON-OPENER

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman attacker Kaile MacLean-Daley (Moretown, Vt.) enjoyed an impressive collegiate debut with five goals and one assist to lead the Emmanuel College Men's Lacrosse team past SUNY Maritime, 14-7, Friday evening at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints open the 2013 campaign with a 1-0 mark for their best start in the program's brief two-year history while the loss drops the Privateers to 0-3 overall.

After seven minutes of scoreless action to open the contest, Emmanuel got on the board first with 8:05 remaining in the opening quarter on an unassisted marker by freshman middie Justin Kelly (Collegeville, Pa.). Just 12 seconds later, junior middle Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn.) answered with his second goal of the season to even the score at 1-1 with 7:53 left in the quarter. Sophomore middie Ryan Sabuda (Indianapolis, Ind.) helped EC regain the lead before the quarter's close with an unassisted tally of his own on the man-up situation to make it 2-1 heading into the second quarter of play.

The score stayed locked at 2-1 for much of the second quarter until MacLean-Daley began his assault on the Privateers net with his first goal of the game coming at the 8:43 marker of the second on an extra-man play to make it 3-1. SUNY Maritime would cut the lead back to one with score from freshman Tom Kelly (Hauppauge, N.Y.) with just 1:48 left in the half as the score would stay at a 3-2 cushion in favor of the hosts heading into the halftime intermission.

MacLean-Daley would trade goals with SUNY Maritime senior middie Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) to open play in the third quarter and make it a 4-3 game before the Saints would take control of the action. Sophomore middie Jake Jaskolski (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) registered back-to-back scores in less than a minute to put EC on top 6-3 with 8:35 left in the quarter. Freshman middie Chris Curtis (Ashland, Mass.) notched his first collegiate tally with 6:18 left to make it 7-3 and then junior attackman Brian O'Regan (Milton, Mass.) made it 8-3 with his first score of the 2013 campaign.

Kelly would stop the Saints run with his second goal of the match and fourth of the year with 2:48 left in the third to cut the lead to 8-4 but Emmanuel would close the quarter strong as MacLean-Daley and Curtis each potted goals with under a minute remaining to give the Saints a 10-4 cushion heading into the final quarter.

Despite scoring three goals in the final quarter, the Privateers were not able to overcome the deficit as the Saints would hold on for the 14-7 victory.

MacLean-Daley's six point performance ties the second-highest single-game total in the program's short history. Jaskolski finished the night with a hat trick while Sabuda and O'Regan each notched three points on a goal and two assists.

For the Privateers, Kelly potted three goals while Messina collected three points on two goals and one assist.

Sophomore goalie Austin Lauzier played well for Emmanuel making 14 save to improve to 1-0 on the year while SUNY Maritime goalie Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y.) held his own between the pipes making a season-high 20 saves.

Emmanuel will return to action on Wednesday, March 6 when they head to Dorchester, Mass. to face on UMass Boston at the BC High Field at 4:00 PM while the Privateers are back at it this Sunday when they head to Buzzards Bay, Mass. to take on Maine Maritime on the campus of Mass. Maritime at 12:00 PM.
