2010 SEASON IN REVIEW
Jan. 4, 2011
The Emmanuel Men's Golf Team competed in its second season of varsity competition in 2010. The Saints swung away in eight matches this season, with the 2010 season culminating in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament, played at Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, R.I.
Emmanuel returned four players from the squad's inaugural season in 2009. The veterans included senior captains Nicholas Cyrus (Rockland, Mass.) and Patrick Dillon (Bedford, N.H.), as well as junior Michael DelSignore (Narragansett, R.I.) and sophomore captain Daniel Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.). Second-year Head Coach Julio Avila also added six newcomers to his 10-person team this season.
The Saints hosted two matches this season, playing at Emmanuel's home course, William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park. The Saints defeated Newbury College on September 15th and then split with Daniel Webster College and Elms College on October 12th. Emmanuel's season-low team score came in the Saints' final match of the season. Emmanuel shot a 347 as a team on day two of the GNAC Championship. The round featured season-low scores for several members of the Saints' squad.
Cyrus led the Saints in six matches this season, carding a season low with an 80 on September 21st at the John Queenan Memorial Tournament, played at Point Sebago Golf Resort in Casco, Maine. Classmate Patrick Dillon scored for Emmanuel in three matches. Dillon's season low, an 88, came in the Saints' October tri-match.
Ferdenzi was a solid contributor in his second varsity season. He scored in five matches, carding his season-low (87) on day-two of the GNAC Championship. DelSignore, a two-sport athlete at Emmanuel, also scored for the Saints in five matches. Like Ferdenzi and Cyrus, the junior shot his season-low (87) on day-two of the GNACs.
Sophomore transfer Rob Cavaliere (Stonington, Conn.) was a pleasant addition to the squad this year. Cavaliere scored in four matches and carded his season low, an 89, twice during the year. Freshman Melanie Dean (Pittsfield, Mass.) made history at Emmanuel this year, becoming the first-ever female to golf for the Saints varsity team. Dean was Emmanuel's fifth golfer twice this season and was the deciding scorer in the Saints' win over Daniel Webster College on October 12th.
Freshmen Jeff Alsip (Quincy, Mass.), Ben Taylor (Newbury, Mass.) and Michael McGrath (Walpole, Mass.) played well in their rookie seasons. Alsip led the Saints with a team-low of an 87 at the Elms College Blazers Invitational on September 29th. Taylor represented the Saints in five matches this season, carding his low (91) at the Queenan Memorial Tournament. McGrath played in three matches and shot his low (89) at the second September Blazers Invitational. Fellow rookie and junior Andrew Lekousi (Portland, Me.) played in just one match for the Saints this season.
Coach Avila, who will enter his third season at the helm, will lose Cyrus and Dillon to graduation this May. However, he will return the core of eight veterans along with some solid recruits for the 2011 season in September.
