SAINTS GOLF TEAM CONTINUES TO IMPROVE IN 3rd MATCH OF SEASON

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Anna Maria College golfer Nate McNamara (Leicester, Mass.) shot a one-over par 72 to earn top individual honors, while Westfield State College earned a combined score of 319 to claim team honors at the second Blazers Invitational hosted by Elms College at Chicopee Country Club on Wednesday, September 30th.
McNamara shot a two-under par 34 on the front nine and followed that with a 38 on the back nine to lead all scorers in Wednesday’s invitational. Westfield State’s Derek Robichaud (Foxboro, Mass.) finished second overall with a round of 74, while Bobby Greggerson (Seekonk, Mass.) carded a 77 to claim third place. Both Brett Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) and Dan Korpita (Southampton, Mass.) shot solid rounds of 79 and 80, respectively, to each place in the top 10 and lift Westfield State to a 319 team score.
Rhode Island College had all four of its scoring golfers place in the top 20 for the day to finish second overall with a team score of 329. Anna Maria and Franklin Pierce College tallied scores of 331 to earn a share of third place.
Springfield (334), Becker (336), MCLA (350), Elms (364) Emmanuel (367), Mitchell (367), Newbury (375) and Daniel Webster (383) rounded out the 12-team field.
Emmanuel junior Nicholas Cyrus (Rockland, Mass.) carded his second-straight round of 89 to pace the Saints. Cyrus, who was recently named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men’s Golf Rookie of the Week, shot a 44 on the front and a 45 on the back to lead the blue and gold. Sophomore captain Eric Spanbauer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) improved by 13 strokes from his last match, shooting at 92 and scoring second for Emmanuel.
Junior Patrick Dillon (Bedford, N.H.) shot his second-straight 93 for the Saints. Freshman Matt Wessels (Otisville, Mass.) improved drastically from last week’s match, scoring a 93 as well. Freshman Daniel Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.) shot a 102 to round out the scoring for Emmanuel.
The Saints will travel to Cranston, R.I. on Friday (10/2) to take on the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats and the Rhode Island College Anchorman in a tri-match at Cranston Country Club, beginning at 10am.
