SAINTS SWING AWAY AT BLAZERS INVITATIONAL

GRANBY, Mass. - Elms College sophomore Phil Rurak (Wilbraham, Mass.) shot an even-par 72 to earn individual medalist honors and help pace the Blazers' squad to a first place score of 305 in Wednesday's Blazers Invitational hosted by Elms College at Westover Country Club. Emmanuel's Men's Golf Team finished the day with a 360 to tie for twelfth place out of the 15 competing teams. Freshman golfer Jeff Alsip (Quincy, Mass.) led the way for the Saints, carding an 87 on the day.
Host Elms College finished in first with 305 points followed by Nichols College (317). Rhode Island College and Westfield State University finished in a tie for third (320), Worcester State University finished fifth (324), Anna Maria College placed sixth (325), Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) finished seventh (327), Franklin Pierce University came in eighth (343) and Mitchell College and Daniel Webster College tied for ninth (353). Suffolk University claimed 11th place (358) while Emmanuel College and Becker College scored a 360 each to tie for 12th place. Elms' green team placed 14th (363) and Newbury College rounded out the field of 15 teams with 403 points.
Rurak carded a one-over-par 37 on the front nine before rallying for a one-under-par 35 on the back nine to register the day's low round. Worcester State's Bob Bruso (Auburn, Mass.) and Nichols' Brian Sears (North Grafton, Mass.) each scored rounds of 73 to finish in a tie for second. MCLA's Shane Ortega (Pittsfield, Mass.) earned fourth place honors (74) while Elms' freshman Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine) and Franklin Pierce's BJ Powers (Southbury, Conn.) registered rounds of 75 to tie for fifth.
Alsip's 87 led the Saints, as the rookie carded a 45 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine. Classmate Michael McGrath (Walpole, Mass.) finished with a 43 and a 46 for an 89 on the day. Sophomore Daniel Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.) notched a 92 with a 48 on the way out and a 44 after the turn. Junior Michael DelSignore (Narragansett, RI) scored fourth for Emmanuel with a 92, carding a team-low 41 on the back nine. Junior Andrew Lekousi (Portland, Me.) tallied a 108, rounding out the top five for the Saints.
Emmanuel will compete again on October 8th at Rhode Island College's Fall Invitational. This tournament will take place at Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, R.I., the site of the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament.
