MEN'S GOLF TEAM COMPETES IN SOUTHERN MAINE FALL CLASSIC

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - Husson University junior Chris Hamel (Waterville, Maine) shot a two-round total 146 to earn individual medalist honors and lead the Eagles to a first place team finish at the 2010 USM Fall Classic hosted by the University of Southern Maine at the par 70 Sable Oaks Golf Club in South Portland, Maine. Nicholas Cyrus (Rockland, Mass.) carded the low score for the Saints in the two-day tournament.
Hamel shot a first round 76 and then turned in an invitational-low with a 70, as the Eagles ran away with the victory in the second day of the tournament. Husson finished the first day of competition neck-and-neck with the University of New England 317-318, but the Eagles' golfers shaved five strokes off of their score in the second day (312) to place first with a score of 629. The University of New England and Endicott College finished in a tie for second with a score of 641, followed by the University of Maine-Farmington in fourth with a score of 642. Southern Maine placed fifth with a score of 661, followed by St. Joseph's College (ME) in sixth (675) and Emmanuel College in seventh (776).
UNE freshman Andrew Emery (Winthrop, Maine) finished second with total score of 150. Emery led the pack after the first round of competition with a 73 and followed with a 77 to conclude the tournament.
Cyrus, who was recently named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for the second-straight week, carded back-to-back 92s to lead the Saints with a combined 184. Sophomore Daniel Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.) finished with a two-day total of 195, carding a 99 in the opening round and a 96 on day two.
Freshman Ben Taylor (Newbury, Mass.) also shot a combined 195 for Emmanuel, tallying a 95 on the first day and an even 100 on the second. Sophomore Rob Cavaliere (Stonington, Conn.) notched a 202, shooing a 106 and a 96 for the Saints. Senior Patrick Dillon (Bedford, N.H.) finished with a 215, scoring a 114 and a 101 over the two days.
The Emmanuel Golf Team will compete again on Wednesday at the second Elms College Blazers Invitational. The Saints will tee off at 1:24pm at Westover County Club in Granby, Mass.
