GOLF PLAYS WELL AT USM FALL CLASSIC
GORHAM, Maine – Senior Matteo Pocobene (Malden, Mass.) placed ninth overall to lead the Emmanuel College golf team to a seventh place finish at the University of Southern Maine Fall Classic hosted this Sunday and Monday at the Gorham Country Club.
Host Southern Maine finished second out of eight schools with a two-day score of 618 (299-319) to finish 16 strokes off of first place Saint Joseph's College (ME). The Monks won the tournament with a score of 602 (295-307) and were led by individual medalist Mike Caron with finished the weekend with a 144 (69-75). University of New England placed third with a score of 631 (326-323). UMass Dartmouth and Nichols finished in a two-way tie for fourth with a score of 639.
Pocobene was one of only seven golfers in the field to shoot two rounds in the 70's, carding back-to-back 78's for the Saints. Sophomore Colin Cordero (Bolton, Conn.) placed 25th with a score of 166 (85-81). Freshman David Byrne (Newport, R.I.) and Brian Daly (Burlington, Mass.) played well shooting 171 and 174 over the two days, respectively.
Emmanuel returns to action this coming weekend at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship hosted by UMass Dartmouth at the Allendale Country Club.
