BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Men's Golf Team put together a landmark season in just the program's fourth year as a varsity team. The Saints combined to break the program-records for team low score two different times during the season and an Emmanuel rookie set a new mark for individual low score. The Saints competed in seven different tournaments in 2012, culminating with the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship at Blackstone National Golf Club on October 20th and 21st.
Emmanuel opened the season by finishing two strokes off the lead in a tri-match with Newbury College and Daniel Webster College at Putterham Meadows. The Saints then placed third in a home quad-match with Suffolk, Newbury and Daniel Webster. The squad then picked up steam, as they notched Emmanuel's team-low score of 325 at the Elms College Blazers Invitational, finishing 3rd out of 15 teams at Westover Golf Course. A week and half later, Emmanuel tied the program-low 325 at the Saints' second home quad match at Franklin Park.
Competing in the two-day University of Southern Maine Classic, the Saints fired off a program-low of 314, setting another new record on the season. After competing in the Westfield State University Invitational, the Saints geared up for the conference championship. Emmanuel posted a seventh place finish in the two-day tourney, which was hosted by GNAC rival Anna Maria College.
Emmanuel's squad of 11 players featured 7 rookies for the 2012 campaign. Additionally, four rookies were consistently among the Saints' five scorers throughout the season. The young team was honored by the conference with weekly awards on three different weeks during the season. Sophomore transfer Brett Burman (Bridgewater, Conn.) was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week twice (10/1/12 and 10/8/12) on consecutive weeks, while freshman P.J. Levesque (Norton, Mass.) also received the honor on September 17, 2012.
Levesque shot an individual program-record low of 75 in his first collegiate match. Burman went one less on day-two of the USM Classic, when he set a new record with a three-over par 74.
Freshman Matteo Pocobene (Malden, Mass.) was named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team for Emmanuel. Pocobene was consistently in the Saints' top-four throughout the season. The rookie carded his season low on October 3rd with a 77. He also registered a 78 and a 79 at the two-day USM Classic.
Freshman Michael Rague (Old Orchard Beach, Me.), a top-five scorer for Emmanuel, shot his season best of 78 on October 7th in the USM Classic. The two captains, sophomore Michael Burgess (Milton, Mass.) and junior Ben Taylor (Newbury, Mass.), were the only two veterans that appeared in the Saints' line-up this season. The two brought stability and leadership to the young squad in Emmanuel's fourth year as a varsity program.
Head Coach Julio Avila will return 10 of his 11 players to the line-up for the 2013 season.
