INDOOR AND OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD SEASON IN REVIEW
June 10, 2010
The Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Programs wrapped up another successful campaign during the 2009-2010 academic year. The Saints competed in fourteen meets with seven of them coming during the winter indoor season and seven during the spring outdoor season. Both the indoor and outdoor teams sent male and female representatives to the highly competitive New England Division III Championships in each season and numerous program records fell during the successful year.
The winter season was highlighted by the 17 new program records that were set. Fifteen individual records were broken and two new relay marks were made. Among the record-breakers was newcomer Simone Ford (White Plains, N.Y.), a sophomore transfer who set new school records in four different events, including the 55m (7.62), the 60m (8.22), the 200m (27.54) and the long jump (17'6"). Also setting multiple indoor records this year was sophomore Brittany Sorice (Dover, N.H.), making her mark in the 500m (1:25.48) and in the 600m (1:43.30).
On the men's side, multiple indoor records were set by both Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.) and Jordan Coulombe (Saco, Me.). Cowles' new records were in the 600m (1:28.11) and in the 800m (2:03.94), while Coulombe set program marks in the high jump (5'11.25") and the pentathlon (2651 points).
Further indoor program records were set by sophomores Shannon McCabe (Charlestown, R.I.) in the 55m hurdles (9.58), Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.) in the 400m (62.61) and Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.) in the 5000m (16:28.80). Two freshmen made their mark during the indoor season as well, as Ariana Nelson (Coto De Caza, Calif.) set a new record in the high jump (5'1") and James Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.) set one in the 55m (6.83).
Kulubya and Ford teamed up with freshman Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.) and junior Irene Limlengco (Brookline, Mass) to break the school record in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:49.02. Kulubya, Limlengco and Sorice were joined by junior Alison Lynch (Pawtucket, R.I.) for a new record in the 4x400 meter relay (4:17.04).
The Saints sent six student-athletes to the Indoor New England Division III Championships in Gorham and Lewiston, Maine. Ford earned All-New England honors in the long jump. Kulubya and Sorice competed in the 400m and the 600m, respectively. The two joined Limlengco and Lynch for their record-breaking time in the 4x400 meter relay. The lone male representative for the Saints was junior Thomas Ryan Maher (Gales Ferry, Conn.), running an 8.39 time in the 55-meter hurdles.
The outdoor season saw ten different program records fall and thirteen Emmanuel athletes make their way into the Division III New Englands. Limlengco broke two individual records this spring, including the 100m (13.19) and the 200m (27.52). Kulubya set dual marks in the 400m (62.61) and the 800m (2:28.99). McCabe set another mark in the hurdles with a time of 17.49 in the 100mH. Coulombe picked up another program record in the high jump with a leap of 6'0. Maher launched the shot put 34'5.75" for a new program record and junior Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) heaved the javelin 163'10" to set a new Emmanuel record in the event.
Senior Doug Gillum (West Boyston, Mass.), who is a 3-sport athlete and 6-time team captain set a new Emmanuel record in the hammer, with a throw of 85'8" on April 4th. Victoria, Limlengco, Kulubya and sophomore Nacy Brandao (Dorchester, Mass.) combined for a school record time of 51.95 in the 4x100 meter relay on March 20th.
The thirteen Emmanuel representatives at the Outdoor New England Division III Championships included: Abram, Nelson, Limlengco, McCabe, Victoria, Darlene Charles (Dorchester, Mass.), Kulubya, Andrew Heath (Stanford, Conn.), Ben Cleveland (Auburn, Me.), Julie Young (Derry, N.H.), Sorice, Cowles and Coulombe.
The Saints were also stellar in the classrooms at Emmanuel this year. Seventeen track & field student-athletes were named GNAC Academic All-Conference for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.25. The Academic All-Conference honorees included: Sorice, Gillum, Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, Mass.), Maureen Kellett (Westborough, Mass.), Kathleen King (South Easton, Mass.), Marissa LaFlamme (Newburyport, Mass.), Abram, Coulombe, Katherine Fahey (Attleboro, Mass.), Ford, Marissa Keegan (North Easton, Mass.), Lynch, Maher, McCabe, Nicholas O'Brien (Watertown, Conn.), Sarah Soldano (Bethel, Conn.) and Patrick Welton (Derby, Conn.).
Head Coach Tony DaRocha, who just wrapped up his 9th year coaching the six different running programs at Emmanuel, will lose six seniors from the track & Field programs to graduation this year, including Gillum, Robert Littleton (Plymouth, Mass.), Welton, Soldano, Dan D'Amato (Huntington, Mass.) and Keegan. DaRocha and Assistant Coaches Alice Kramer, Steve Keyes and Will Feldman will look to add a strong class of recruits to the more than thirty returning veterans next year.
