May 1, 2010
MEDFORD, Mass. - Emmanuel College sent thirteen qualifying representatives to the New England Division III Championships held at Tufts University on Friday and Saturday. Two Emmanuel individuals, as well as both the men's and women's 4 x 400 meter relay teams, set program records, while one Emmanuel athlete received All-New England honors in her event.
The Saints' action opened up on Friday afternoon, with junior Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) competing in the javelin. Abram was looking to improve on his school record throw of 163'11". He narrowly missed his mark, launching the javelin 162'3" and placing 18th overall at Tufts.
Emmanuel kicked off Saturday morning with two student-athletes competing in the high jump. Both Ariana Nelson (Coto De Caza, Calif.) and Irene Limlengco (Brookline, Mass.) jumped at 10:00am. Nelson reached 4'10.25" and finished 18th, while Limlengco took 8th place overall with her 5'0.25" leap. Limlengco's top-eight jump earned the junior All-New England honors. She is one of just seven Emmanuel athletes to receive All-New England honors for outdoor track & field events over the nine-year history of the Saints' program.
Sophomore Shannon McCabe (Charlestown, R.I.) competed in the 100-meter hurdles and placed 17th overall with a 16.87 program-record time. Limlengco also ran in the 100-meter race and placed 27th with a time of 13.46.
Limlengco teamed up with Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.), Darlene Charles (Dorchester, Mass.) and Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.) for a 17th place finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Kulubya then took 18th place individually in the 400-meters, setting a new school record with a time of 61.07. Sophomore Brittany Sorice (Dover, N.H.) also ran the 400-meters, placing 24th overall with a time of 62.49.
Two Emmanuel athletes ran the 400-meter men's race. Sophomore Andrew Heath (Stanford, Conn.) and junior Ben Cleveland (Auburn, Me.) pushed each other to finish 11th and 12th, respectively with a time of 50.21. This was a personal best for Heath.
Later in the day, Emmanuel's 1-mile relay teams took to the track. Eight Emmanuel athletes competed in the 4 x 400 meter relays. One the women's side, Kulubya, Julie Young (Derry, N.H.), Victoria and Sorice placed 11th with a cumulative time of 4"13.94. The men's team, consisting of Heath, Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.), Jordan Coulombe (Saco, Me.) and Cleveland, captured a time of 3:38.53.
