April 3, 2011
FITCHBURG, Mass. - For their third meet of the season, the Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams took the track at Fitchburg State University's Sheehan Memorial Invitational. Originally scheduled for Saturday, weather pushed the event back a day. Overall, the men's program finished 7th out of twelve teams, and the women 5th out of eleven. Twenty-one personal bests were recorded by the Saints, along with an unbelievable seven school records set, five New England Division-III Championship qualifying times and one Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) qualifier.
Junior Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.) finished 2nd in the 1500 meters, breaking his own school record with a new time of 4:10.70. One record was not enough for Ibrahim as he took 5th place in the 800 meters with the record time of 2:00.79.
Senior standouts Ben Cleveland (Auburn, Me.) and Andrew Heath (Stamford, Conn.) both qualified for the NE D-III Championships in the 400 meters, coming in 2nd and 3rd with times of 50.23 and 50.28. Heath led off and Cleveland anchored first place 4x400 meter relay team, completed by Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) and Eric Donnelly (Halifax, Mass.) who combined for a 3:29.36 finish.
Freshman hurdler Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) raced his way to an 8th place finish in the 110 meter hurdles posting a time of 21.53.
On the women's side, Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.) secured her spot at the ECAC Championships that she has been after all season with a time of 59.59 in the 400 meters. Joining her at the NE D-III Championships is junior Shannon McCabe (Charlestown, R.I.) in her event of the 100m hurdles. McCabe finished in 16.56, placing 2nd on the day.
Winning the long jump was freshman jumper Lauren Atkins (Saugus, Mass.) with a distance of 16'7.25", good enough for a school record and a NE D-III qualifying length. Atkins also came in 3rd in the 100 meters and 6th in the high jump.
Kelly Ulf (Lunenburg, Mass.) had herself a day as well, coming in 2nd in the triple jump and 4th in the high jump. In the triple jump, her distance of 33'4" also earned her a new school record and a trip to the NE D-III Championships.
Next Saturday (4/9), the Saints will travel to Weston, Massachusetts for the Regis College Invitational.
