TAVARES & CAVANAUGH EARN MAJOR GNAC HONORS

BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College senior Francisco Tavares (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Jake Cavanaugh (Redding, Conn.) were both recognized by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in the first-ever GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Major Awards announcement on Friday afternoon. Tavares was named the GNAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year while Cavanaugh was named the GNAC Men's Track Rookie of the Year. Junior Jordyn Gonsor (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Patrick Carty (Sweden, Maine) represented the Saints on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Tavares wraps up his career with the Saints with Athlete of the Year honors following a stellar senior campaign that saw a pair of wins at the GNAC Championship meet in both the 200 meter dash and the long jump. Tavares bested the field in the 200m race with a PR time of 23.12 seconds which ranks fifth all-time in EC history for the event. In the long jump, the senior posted a leap of 19'8.25'' (6.00m) which also ranks fifth all-time in the Emmanuel record books. He also finished second in the GNAC Championship in the 400m race with a time of 51.17 seconds and was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that took home first place honors.

Over his four years, Tavares will graduate Emmanuel ranking in the top 10 in five events. In addition to the 200m and long jump, he currently ranks fourth in the 400m race, ninth in the 100m race and was a member of the 4x400m relay team that clocked the 10^th best time in program history.

Cavanaugh earned Rookie of the Year honors after a strong showing in his first GNAC Championship meet with a pair of second place finishes in the 110 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. He posted a time of 16.97 seconds in the prelims in the 110 hurdles before a second place showing in the finals with a time of 17.07 seconds and later in the day, ran the 400 meter hurdles race in 1:03.41. He was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that took home first place honors.

On the year, Cavanaugh tabulated times that rank him in Emmanuel's all-time top 10 in both the 110m and 400m events. He currently ranks fourth all-time in the 400m race with a time of 59.26 seconds while his 110 time of 16.82 seconds ranks eighth.

The following Emmanuel student-athletes earned All-GNAC honors for their performance during the GNAC Championship meet on Saturday, April 28. To earn All-GNAC status, each of these athletes won an event at the GNAC Championship.
