Student-Athlete of the Week
Feb. 22, 2011
Emmanuel College's Student-Athlete of the Week is freshman Lauren Atkins. Atkins, a native of Saugus, Massachusetts, has been a standout all season long on the Saints Indoor Track & Field Team. As a rookie, Atkins qualified for the New England Division III Championships in four different events.
Atkins competed along with ten other Emmanuel athletes in the New Englands this past Saturday, with the women's championship held at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. Atkins' individual events were the 55-meters, the 200-meters and the long jump. She also stepped up when her coaches called upon her to run the first leg of the women's 4 x 200-meter relay.
Atkins finished 17th overall in the New Englands in the 55-meters, achieving her personal best with a time of 7.69. She then placed 14th in the 200-meters with a new Emmanuel record of 27.05. Atkins' long jump of 15'8.75" was good enough for 18th place.
She then led off the relay team, which ran 10th overall and qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship with a time of 1:50.39. Atkins, along with teammates Katasi Kulubya, Nathalie Victoria and Simone Ford, will compete this Saturday (2/26) at The Armory in New York City in the ECACs.
