INDOOR TRACK & FIELD WRAPS REGULAR SEASON WITH CUPID CHALLENGE
BOSTON/MEDFORD, Mass. – The Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Teams wrapped up the regular season, spending Valentine’s Day weekend at the Tufts University Cupid Challenge, with selected student-athletes competing at Boston University’s Scarlet and White Invite. The Saints saw twelve new personal records set at Tufts. Three personal records were set at BU and four athletes reached their goals of qualifying for the Division III New England Championships on February 22.
BOSTON/MEDFORD, Mass. – The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams wrapped up the regular season, spending Valentine's Day weekend at the Tufts University Cupid Challenge, with selected student-athletes competing at Boston University's Scarlet and White Invite. The Saints saw twelve new personal records set at Tufts. Three personal records were set at BU and four athletes reached their goals of qualifying for the Division III New England Championships on February 22nd.
Four Emmanuel athletes took to the sleek track at Boston University with hopes of hitting championship qualifying marks in their respective events. Junior Ryan Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.) pulled through in two events, setting new personal records in both the 200m and 400m. Thomas' 200m time of 22.98 qualified him for the D3 New Englands, while his 400m time of 50.12 improved on his ECAC Championship qualifying mark.
Adam Julien raced to a 49.60 finish in the 400m. His record-setting time of 48.74 last weekend keeps him ranked 11th nationally in this event. In March, the top 15 ranked athletes will advance to the NCAA Championship. Julien will race twice more in New England Championships with aspirations of improving on his 400m time prior to the nationals.
Senior captain Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.) pulled out a 1:59.43 finish in the men's 800m, qualifying him for the Division III New England Championship. Freshman Shannon Gay (Woburn, Mass.) sprinted to a championship qualifying time of 27.12 in the women's 200m, setting her new personal record in the event.
Over at Tufts, senior captain Kelly Ulf (Lunenburg, Mass.) hit her mark in the long jump. Ulf leaped 16'3.75", which was a new PR and a Division III New England qualifier. She will now compete in the championship in two different events, the long jump and the high jump.
The Saints set two new personal records in the Mile. Freshman Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) crossed the line in 4:46.22 on the men's side, while senior captain Meaghan Mauer (South Hadley, Mass.) finished in 5:38.66 for the EC women.
Sophomore Zoe Pierce-Dickens (Franklin, Vt.) ran down a PR in the 400m with her time of 64.78. This was one of two personal records on the day for Pierce-Dickens. She also raced to a 28.39 collegiate best finish in the 200m. Classmate Amanda Kennedy (Barnstable, Mass.) also turned in a pair of personal records. Kennedy hit 8.89 in the 60m and 30.23 in the 200m.
Sophomore Craig Schoaf (Raynham, Mass.) snagged his personal best time in the 600m, with his 1:34.32 finish. Junior Christopher Connelly (Quincy, Mass.) topped the Emmanuel field in the men's 5k with his time of 17:12.01, while sophomore Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.) led the Saints' pack in the 800m with his time of 2:04.14.
With the regular season in the books, the Saints will now send several individuals and three different relay teams to compete in post-season championships. Up first for Emmanuel is the Division III New England Championships on February 22nd. The women's championship will be hosted by Springfield College and the men's championship will take place across the river at MIT.
