SAINTS SHINE AT SILFEN INVITATIONAL
NEW LONDON, Conn. – 23 members of the Emmanuel College track & field team posted personal bests on Saturday during the 2016 Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College. Both teams finished 18th overall in their respective fields.
NEW LONDON, Conn. – 23 members of the Emmanuel College track & field team posted personal bests on Saturday during the 2016 Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College. Both teams finished 18th overall in their respective fields.
On the men's side, junior Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) continued his strong spring with a new PR in the 1500m race, cruising to a 4:16.94 finish, good for 27th place in the 70-person field. Senior Corey Hebert (Acushnet, Mass.) also PR'ed in the event with a 4:43.82 showing.
Freshman Jake Zannoni (Merrimack, N.H.) ran his best 400m time of the year at 58.19 while classmate Daniel LaChance (Raynham, Mass.) posted a PR in the 100m sprint clocking in at 13.76 seconds. LeChance added another PR in the 200m race with his 27.71 second finish while sophomore Francisco Tavares (Boston, Mass.) ran the same race at 23.20 seconds for his own PR.
In the field, sophomore Constantino Politis (Saugus, Mass.) PR'ed in the hammer throw with a chuck of 73'0.50" feet.
The women's squad enjoyed many PR's as well during the meet including a 15:23.22 time in the steeplechase by freshman Angela Brocco (Levittown, N.Y.).
Like the men, the ladies posted two PR's in the 1500 event as sophomore Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Katherine Holmberg (Easton, Mass.) recorded strong times. Varca finished the race at 5:16.61 while Holmberg wasn't far behind at 5:22.30. Varca also PR'ed in the 200m spring with a 28.61 time while junior Nicole Assetta (Manchester, N.H.) came in at 28.85 seconds for her PR.
Rookie hurdler Mary Nahorniak (Chicopee, Mass.) PR'ed in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.20 seconds while junior Katherine Zombik (Holyoke, Mass.) finished seventh in the event with a 17.04 showing.
Freshman Reilly Boyle (Wells, Maine) put together a solid 800m race with a PR of 2:31.01 while senior Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.) PR'ed in her 5k event with a 20:12.88 showing.
In the field, the Saints posted six PR's with strong showings by bother jumpers and throwers. Frehsman Angelica Czercowy (Hebron, Conn.) jumped 14'3.75" in the long jump while Devan Phillips (North Kingston, R.I.) PR'ed in the same event with a leap of 13'6". Czercowy also PR'ed in the triple jump coming in at 31'6" as did freshman Carly Jones (Lake Placid, N.Y.) with her 30'7".75 showing.
Zombik, sophomore Marissa LaFay (Tabernacle, N.J.) and freshman Cara Welsh (Shrewsbury, Mass.) all registered new PR's in their throwing events for the Saints. Zombik in the javelin with a toss of 94'7", LaFay in the shot put at 20'6.5" and Welsh in the discus at 97"8.75" which was good for a seventh place showing in the event field.
The Saints return to action next weekend when they stay local, crossing the river to compete in the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. Meet start time is currently scheduled for 12:00 PM.
