SAINTS END REGULAR SEASON WITH 9-0 WIN OVER WENTWORTH

DORCHESTER, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team defeated Colleges of the Fenway (COF) rival Wentworth Institute of Technology, 9-0, at the Sportsmen's Club on Thursday afternoon. The non-conference match was Emmanuel's last regular season contest. With the win, the Saints end the regular season at 8-5 overall and 6-3 in GNAC play. Wentworth is now 3-11 on the year.
Emmanuel swept all three doubles matches, as well as the six singles contests, en route to the 9-0 win. The Saints opened things up with the sophomore/freshman team of Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) defeating Wentworth's Joanna Gustafson and Natalya Cappellini, 8-4. Emmanuel's senior captain Megan Harrington (Leicester, Mass.) and freshman Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, Conn.) shut-out Olivia Hegner and Sophie Boyce, 8-0, in second doubles. The Saints' third doubles win came by way of sophomore Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) and freshman Kate Biffinger (Avon, Conn.) downing Deborah Massaro and Jillian Flynn, 8-1.
Dey went on to defeat Gustafson, 6-2 and 6-1, giving the Saints a win in No. 1 singles. Harrington topped Cappellini, 6-0, 6-3, in 2nd singles. Reid cruised to a win over Hegner at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Konecnik defeated Massaro in a close, 7-6, 6-2, match at No. 4 singles. Senior Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, N.H.) won her match at No. 5 singles, defeating Flynn, 6-0, 6-3. In 6th singles action, Woznicki downed Boyce, 6-1, 6-1, for an Emmanuel win, as the Saints eased to a 9-0 match victory.
With the regular season complete, Emmanuel has earned the 4th seed in the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Saints will now host the 5th-seeded Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University at the Winsor School courts on Wednesday (10/20) in the GNAC quarterfinals. During the regular season, the Saints defeated the Wildcats, 6-3.
