THE LEAD: The Emmanuel College softball team scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 5-2 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Day 3 action of the NTC Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman designated player Grace Orcutt (Lexington, Mass.) got the scoring started with a two-RBI double to right to give Emmanuel an early 2-0 lead in the first.
- The Saints added a third run on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Kerry Sendrick (Medway, Mass.) to account for the 3-0 score after one.
- The Flying Dutchmen got two back in the bottom of the second inning on a two-RBI single by Kate Whelski (Tower City, Pa.) to left field to make it a 3-2 game.
- The game remained close for the middle frames as EC senior pitcher Olivia Burgos (Newington, Conn.) and LVC hurler Sarah Musselman (Reading) shut down the opposition to keep the score at 3-2 heading into the final inning.
- In the seventh, Emmanuel added a pair of insurance runs as junior outfielder Sarah Hoisl (West Hartford, Conn.) led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a two-out RBI double by senior catcher Casey Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) to make it 4-3. Sheehan came around to score on an RBI single by Orcutt to move the score to 5-3.
- Lebanon Valley made it an interesting finish, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Burgos and the Saints were able to work out of the jam to strand the runners and preserve the 5-2 victory.
