O'DWYER, KIRWAN LEAD EMMANUEL OVER EMERSON, 75-56
Feb. 8, 2011
BOSTON, Mass.- Emmanuel College got double-doubles from Fiona O'Dwyer (Stamford, Conn.) and Meghan Kirwan (Melrose, Mass.) to lead the Saints to a 75-56 victory over Emerson College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest played at Emerson's Brown & Plofker Gym on Tuesday night. O'Dwyer had a game high 18 points and added 13 rebounds, while Kirwan tallied 12 points and pulled down an incredible 18 boards. The 31 rebounds between the two women equaled Emerson's team total.
The game was close through the first eleven minutes as Emmanuel clung to an 18-16 lead following an Elissa Chojnicki (Dover, N.H.) three-point shot for the Lions. The Saints then finished the half on a 17-7 run to break the game open and led 35-23 at the half.
Emmanuel ran the lead to 25 with just over 10 minutes remaining, and Emerson was never able to get closer than 17 points for the remainder of the contest. Emmanuel's pressure defense was a thorn in the Lions' paw all night long as the Saints forced Emerson into 30 turnovers, and converted those into 29 points. The Saints also dominated inside play as Emmanuel held a 44-18 edge in points in the paint.
In addition to O'Dwyer and Kirwan, Victoria Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.) had 11 points for the Saints. Senior guards Kristin LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) and Casey Shevlin (Medford, N.Y.) dished out 5 assists apiece for the visitors.
Emerson also had three players post double figures as Chojnicki totaled 14 points, Olivia DiNucci (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 13, and Kathy Andrade (Hull, Mass.) dropped in 10. Olivia Connors (Salem, N.H.) pulled down 10 boards for the Lions.
Emmanuel (14-7, 8-0 GNAC) hosts Mount Ida College at 1:00pm on Saturday. Emerson (8-14, 6-3 GNAC) is also off until Saturday when the Lions make the trek over Beacon Hill to Suffolk University for a 1:00pm start. Both games are GNAC contests.
