AMHERST, Mass. – Three members from the Emmanuel College men's lacrosse program have been selected to participate in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) East-West Senior All Star Game on Friday, May 31st. Seniors Ben Hartig-Orr (Reading, Vt.) and Steve Gervasio (Johnston, R.I.) have been named to the EAST team while Assistant Coach Rob Murray will serve on the EAST coaching staff, it was announced by the NEILA earlier today.
All players and coaches were nominated by the head coaches within the NEILA. Players were then ranked and selected by a committee, awarding seniors from all three NCAA Divisions who played their college career in the New England region. This all-star game is the only one of its kind, being a regional all-star game which includes players from Divisions 1, 2, and 3.
The duo becomes the seventh and eighth players in Emmanuel program history to be selected to play in the annual NEILA East-West All-Star game joining the ranks of Brian O'Regan ('14), Pat Heffernan ('16), Chris Curtis ('16), Chris Baglivi ('17), Michael Sousa ('18) and Austin Rosenberg ('18).
The NEILA East-West game also gives assistant coaches from some of the top programs each year the opportunity to take the reins as the coaching staffs of each team.
"It's a great opportunity for members of our program to be recognized and compete one more time with each other and against strong competition in the region," said Emmanuel College Head Coach Trevor Craven. "We're very happy to see Coach Murray selected to be a part of the staff and proud that he's come full circle in the event."
Murray played in the NEILA East-West Senior All-Star game following his senior season at Southern New Hampshire University.
The coaches are also nominated by the head coaches who are members of the NEILA. It is a great opportunity for assistants to add their flare on the game.
Along with Murray, this year the East will be head manned by Jon Horgan (Saint Joseph's ME) and Jack Wilson (Curry). The West will be coached by Devin Callahan (Eastern Connecticut State), Connor Eschmann (Western New England), Will Roberts (Clark) and Mike Wilus (Plymouth State).
The game will take place at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. Face-off will be at 6:00 PM and feature 54-student athletes selected by the NEILA.
