HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans broke a 7-7 tie midway through the third quarter on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Nick Aleksonis (Weare, N.H.) to take the lead for good with the score triggering a 6-1 scoring flurry over an 11 minute span that gave Castleton a 13-8 lead with 13 minutes remaining.
- Emmanuel scored the final three goals of the action on tallies from sophomore Charlie Stutzenberger (Plymouth, Mass.) and seniors Ben Hartig-Orr (Reading, Vt.) and Matt Katon (East Falmouth, Mass.) but it was not enough as Castleton held on for the 13-11 final.
- The squads traded goals early on as Hartig-Orr scored twice in the opening quarter in between goals by CSU senior attack Tom Pardew (Wallingford, Conn.) and Sedell to account for a 2-2 score after one.
- The Spartans took a 3-2 lead on an unassisted marker from senior Kyle Lutinski (New Fairfield, Conn.) but the Saints responded with back-to-back goals by senior Steve Gervasio to remain a 4-3 lead.
- Castleton answered with three straight scored to build a 6-4 lead capped with a score by Sedell and had a chance to add more on a man-up opportunity but it was the Saints who capitalized as Katon found the back of the net with 4:29 to play in the half with a man-down goal, making it 6-5.
- Hartig-Orr tied the game briefly at 6-6 with 1:20 remaining in the stanza before junior middie Cameron Russell (St. Albans, Vt.) netted his second goal of the night with 13 tics to play in the half to give the Spartans a 7-6 advantage heading into the break.
