BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman attack Colton Michel (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) scored a game-high four goals to go along with two assists to lift the Colby College men's lacrosse team past Emmanuel College, 9-5, Tuesday evening at Roberto Clemente Field. The Mules improve to 2-2 on the year while the loss drops the Saints to 1-5 overall.
Michel got the scoring started with an unassisted tally 5:05 into the first quarter to give Colby a 1-0 lead before the Saints answered with a goal by sophomore middie Charlie Moran (Maitland, Fla.) to even the score at 1-1 with 5:52 to play in the quarter.
Colby senior middie Jack Bratches (New Canaan, Conn.) made it 2-1 with his second goal of the year but Emmanuel answered again as junior Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) tallied his 10th goal of the year with 1:34 left in the quarter to square the score at 2-all.
The Mules took the lead for good with just 39 seconds to play in the first quarter with sophomore Kevin Beil's (Manhasset, N.Y.) first goal of the season, assisted by Michael, to give Colby a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
With the momentum on their side to open the second quarter, Colby scored twice in the first four minutes of play to increase the lead to 5-2 with goals by junior Kevin Seiler (Dairen, Conn.) and Beil separated by just 25 seconds on the clock
The Saints got one back with 7:29 to play in the half on a man-up score by senior Michael Rogers (New Haven, Conn.) to cut the lead to 5-3 but the Mules closed the half with two more goals to take a 7-3 lead into the intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter, Michel opened the second half scoring with his third goal of the game to give Colby an 8-3 lead before Emmanuel made things interesting with three straight goals to make it a two goal game at 8-6. Junior attack Donnie Litzelman (Stratham, N.H.) recorded his second goal of the year to open the scoring spurt with a man-up tally before senior middie Justin Kelly (Collegeville, Pa.) got into the mix with his sixth goal of the season to make it an 8-5 game. Senior Chris Curtis (Ashland, Mass.) registered his team-leading 15th goal of the year with 5:20 remaining in the contest to make it 8-6 and force the Mules to call a timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Mules were able to regroup and Michel netted his fourth goal of the action to silence the Saints comeback attempt to make it 9-6. Colby would score two insurance markers down the stretch to account for the 11-6 final.
The loss for Emmanuel snaps a 15-game winning streak at Clemente Field.
The Saints are now idle until March 26 when they host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 12:00 PM while Colby returns to play this Saturday when they head back to the greater Boston area for a 1:00 PM tilt against two-time defending nation champion, Tufts University.
