BOSTON, Mass. - Pat Coll scored five goals and Nick Treon added four assists to lift the United States Merchant Marine Academy over Emmanuel College, 16-11, in men's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon in Conway, S.C.
The Mariners (2-1) led the Saints (1-4) by three goals after the first quarter, despite allowing EC YEAR Charlie Moran to open the scoring with his first goal of the year TIME into the game.
Coll and Treon took over from there, as three of USMMA's five goals in the frame came from Coll with an assist to Treon. Coll also assisted on a man-up goal scored by Jack Renard.
The Saints regained their composure in the second quarter and evened the score at 5-5 after three goals in a four-minute span from Chris Curtis, Michael Donovan, and Sean Reilly. Curtis' goal was part of another hat trick for the senior 100-goal scorer, while Reilly scored his first of the season. Donnie Litzelman earned the assist on Donovan's goal.
The teams traded goals in the next few minutes, but it was the Mariners that took charge before halftime. USMMA scored three goals in the final six minutes of the quarter to regain a three-goal advantage.
In the third quarter, Litzelman fed Donovan again for a man-up goal, and Sam Ward followed it with a goal of his own to draw the Saints to within one. Unfortunately for EC, that was as close as they would get, as the Mariners put together two more 3-0 runs in the second half to fend off any late Emmanuel comeback bid.
Coll finished with five goals and an assist in the win, while Treon scored once and dished out four assists. Matt Kane, Jack Renard, and Tucker Dodson all scored a pair of goals for the Mariners. Kevin Young earned the victory in goal, making eight saves on 19 shots.
Curtis led the way for the Saints offensively, tallying three goals and an assist. Donovan also earned a hat trick in the losing effort. Charlie Moran chipped in with two goals and an assist. In goal, Cole Scadden made eight saves and was tasked with the loss.
The Mariners outshot the Saints 39-30 and won 19 of 30 faceoffs on the afternoon. The two sides combined for 15 penalty minutes on 18 total infractions.
Next up for the Saints is the home opener as Colby visits Clemente Field on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
