Bio

After serving as the Head Coach of the Emmanuel College men's volleyball program for nine seasons, Bori May was named the Head Coach of the Emmanuel women's volleyball program during the summer of 2023 to become the first full-time Head Coach in the history of both programs. He is the fifth Head Coach in the program's history.

In his very first season with the women's program, May coached the team to the best single-season win improvement from one season to the next since 2000, improving from seven wins in 2022 to 17 victories in 2023. The 17-11 overall record marked the first time since 2014 that the program finished with a winning record.

Emmanuel women's volleyball qualified for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs for the first time since 2018, clinching the No. 7 seed and a home playoff game in the GNAC First Round, following a 9-6 GNAC regular season. The Saints would claim their first playoff win since 2015 after defeating Colby-Sawyer in five sets in the GNAC Play-In Round Match.

By season's end, the women's program, led by COach May, claimed multiple GNAC All-Conference Honors including the 2023 GNAC Rookie of the Year (Kason Huynh) and GNAC All-Conference Second Team member (Isabella Marquez). Huynh became the third Saint in program history to win the Conference Rookie of the Year honor while Marquez became the first player since 2018 to be named to an All-Conference Team.

Coach May took over the EC men's program before the start of the 2015 season, coming to Emmanuel and bringing an abundance of playing and coaching experience.  In addition to his GNAC and Division III coaching experience at neighboring Emerson College, May also served as an Assistant Coach for the Division I women's volleyball team at Princeton University in 2013.

While coaching the Emmanuel men's program, May also served as the Head Coach of the Curry College women's volleyball program from 2017 through 2021, compiling a total of 43 wins over four playing seasons including a program-record 13 wins in 2019. His program earned the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Sportsmanship Team Award in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

May was named the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year after guiding the Saints to 19 wins with an underclassmen-heavy roster. In eight playing seasons at Emmanuel, he's coached a total of 18 players to GNAC All-Conference honors and made trips to the GNAC tournament every year at Emmanuel the tournament was sponsored.

A California native, May did his undergraduate work at Santa Monica College and at California State University, Northridge, earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications Studies in 2011.  During the summers, May is the clinic coordinator and head coach of the Slainte Volleyball Club. Since 2007, he has run volleyball camps and club programs in San Francisco.

May is an accomplished player as well, setting for the San Francisco Paai Kau Smash and the Los Angeles Mad Dogs.  Since 2002, he has led his teams to one 1st place finish, three 2nd place finishes and several top five finishes in the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (NACIVT).  May led Hazard Volleyball to a regional championship in the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA) in 2012 and led XLVB to four Gold Regional Championships in the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) in ('08, '09, '10, '12). As a collegiate setter, May captained his Santa Monica College Team in 2001.
